The Appeal

The original wedgy Esprit was cutting edge in literal and metaphorical ways. But there is a strong case to argue that the ‘Stevens Esprit’ was even better.
Just 268 naturally aspirated 2.2L X180s were built and here we have one of them. Finished in stand out correct Calpyso Red following a recent glass-out respray, the car also benefits from a full rebuild of the 2.2L 172bhp Type 912 engine 4,000 miles ago.
The timing belt, water pump and suspension have also been attended to, which delivers to tbe buyer a rare mid-engined icon in very good order. The vendor describes it as ‘close to concours quality.’ Aside from some light wear to the rare beige cloth interior, we’d have to concur.
With MOT to June 2025 this is a very good example of one of modern motoring’s most rewarding sports cars.
The vendor writes:
When you have served your time the car gives you what you want. Yes, it’s fast and I guess 150mph is achievable. But this isn’t about just speed. It’s about the handling and feeling at one with the car.
“It’s not easy to describe. If you want a fast car then by a modern Audi or BMW. If you want to turn your bedroom poster from the 1970s and '80s into a reality, then here it is. Learn to drive the car and it will not disappoint.”
