Highlights
- Good solid example of the legendary off roader
- Holds great potential as a restoration candidate or for an off-road build
- Brilliant 2.5 litre petrol engine in good order
The Appeal
When thinking of rugged, dependable and capable 4x4s, there are seldom models that come to mind more so than the Land Rover Defender. A name synonymous with those in the need for a go anywhere vehicle to conquer some of the most challenging terrain the world has to offer. The Defender is undeniably a legend.
With demand and appreciation for Defenders on a seemingly endless upward trend, examples such as this really are a rarity and for the discerning Land Rover enthusiast, make an excellent buy. This is one that holds great potential as a candidate for restoration or perhaps as a full out off road build, and as it is currently in running driving form, is one that could be used in the interim with very little work.
The History and Paperwork
- First registered 12/10/1988
- Believed to be an ex ambulance, hence the incredibly low displayed mileage
- Holds a current MOT, valid with no advisories until October 2023
- MOT records suggest the Defender has amassed very little mileage in recent years
- V5 registration document also present with the vehicle
- Bought by the current owner as something of a usable project vehicle but a lack of time and space means they are looking to move the Defender on to a new owner
The Interior
- Simple rugged, classic Defender interior in good condition
- Six seater layout for added versatility
- Several auxiliary switches from the vehicles previous calling as an ambulance
- Front and rear seating of a good nature largely free from wear and tarnishing
- Rear row of seats could be removed with relative ease to turn the Defender into a van if the new owner wishes to do so
- Incredibly versatile interior space
- At present the passenger areas can only be accessed via the drivers door, rear left passenger and rear tailgate as the other doors will not open
- Dash panel in good order and notably lacking in sun damage and cracking
- Even in its current six seater guise, the Defender sports a vast rear storage area
The Exterior
- Iconic Defender styling that remained largely unchanged throughout the model’s lengthy production
- Full white paint scheme likely due to the vehicle’s previous calling as an ambulance
- Bodywork is in fair condition, and looks to be a solid example with the almost to be expected marks, scratches and blemishes that come with a service vehicle of this age, however nothing to detract from the overall look
- Good honest example of the beloved off roader
- Four steel wheels, also finished in a white paint scheme. In good condition but showing general signs of age, a fifth spare wheel resides on the rear in a white and green ambulance style livery
- It appears as though the fixings for a bonnet mounted spare wheel are also in place
- In its current aesthetic standing this is a Defender that tells stories, turns heads and is a general raw, barebones example of the beloved model. Exactly what a Defender should be
The Mechanics
- Legendary 2.5 litre petrol engine famed for its longevity and reliability
- A true go anywhere vehicle, these Defenders have a great reputation for off road capability, and for good reason
- Engine appears to be a good quality example
- At present only the drivers door, rear left passenger and tailgate open
- No advisories flagged on the most recent MOT test
- Running driving example, ready for its next adventure
- Could be used in its current, more original state but simultaneously lends itself well to modification
Summary
Being a successor to the series Land Rovers, the Defender was always going to be a formidable machine, here we are decades later and the name Defender is still the go to tool for going anywhere. The name is something of a legend and it's clear to see why. For those in need of an extremely capable off-roader that exudes style, look no further. This 1988 110 presents almost as a blank canvas, onto which the new owner can paint exactly what they want in a Defender.
Although more than capable in its current state, light recommissioning and TLC would bring the truck up to standard and would leave the owner with a simple, incredibly raw example of the model, which is arguably what a Defender should always be.
