1988 Land Rover County 110 V8

Highlights

  • One owner from new with the original purchase invoice present
  • Outstanding history folder
  • Former St Johns Ambulance vehicle

The Appeal

Enjoying an everlasting appeal, the Land Rover in all its forms is a true cult icon of the automotive world, and one which has a wealth of enthusiasts and knowledgeable owners around the world, with a worldwide appeal that few other cars can match.
Finding examples with previous few owners is proving harder and harder as the years pass by, but this may just be a true gem. With just one owner from new, the original purchase invoice present and a history folder that wouldn’t look out of place in the British Library, this may just be the V8 powered 110 that you’ve been waiting for, especially if you enjoy a little patina…

History & Paperwork

  • Outstanding history folder spanning the last two decades of ownership
  • Original purchase invoice, along with several copies
  • V5 registered keepers document, showing 0 former keepers
  • Written history of the car, explaining its use with St Johns Ambulance trust, its lifesaving role and its fastidious ownership history
  • Documentation, invoices and service history contained in three large folders
  • Regular servicing, sometimes showing multiple services annually
  • Extensive MoT history
  • ‘Short’ motor rebuild in February 2006 (more details below)
  • Recent works include a new stater motor (2020) water pump/assembly (2016) welding works to the floors and chassis when required (2016, 2019, 2020, 2021) and a new crankshaft pulley in 2021.

The Interior

  • Outstanding condition throughout for a vehicle of this age and mileage
  • Seats show very little signs of use, particularly the second row fold-down seats
  • No rips, tears or damage noted during our photo shoot
  • No front footwell mats fitted
  • A set of seat covers are included with the sale of the vehicle
  • No known water ingress issues with the sunroof
  • The control units for the ambulance lights/sirens are now defunct and disconnected
  • There are no known faults with any of the dials or gauges within the cabin, but the choke cable does not lock correctly

The Exterior

  • Fantastic patina - inimitable by non-natural methods
  • All side and front windows retain the original etched registration markers
  • There is no obvious bodywork damage, but the paintwork has worn significantly over the years from regular use and having decals applied
  • The front oval grille badge is missing, but a spare is provided with the car
  • The usual ‘suspect’ areas such as the ventilation flaps, hinges, mirror mountings etc exhibit patina/corrosion
  • All four wheels are in good condition for their age, though they show the typical surface corrosion found on steel wheels of this era

The Mechanicals

  • Iconic 3.5-litre Rover V8 engine in seemingly good health
  • ‘Short block’ rebuild in 2006, including a re-ground crank, new shells, new rings, re-bore, head skim, new head gasket, crack/vacuum testing, new timing chains, new water pump, new tappets and various other items
  • Regularly serviced throughout the years by a variety of specialists and local concerns, all of which is documented in the extensive history folder
  • The engine bay/block itself is tidy but would benefit from a thorough detailing for a more in-depth assessment, though there are no known faults with any of the mechanical systems on the vehicle
  • Starts easily, runs well and quickly settles to idle off-choke
  • The vehicle has no current MoT.

Summary

Offering an almost unrepeatable opportunity to obtain a one-owner-from-new V8 110, this is a chance that no Land Rover enthusiast should pass up. With potential to either carry out a sympathetic restoration to retain its fabulous patina or the chance to rebuild this 110 from the ground-up, the potential is seemingly endless.
