1988 Honda Goldwing GL1500

Highlights

  • Just 3 former keepers
  • Honda’s superb tourer
  • Packed with features and comforts
  • Flat-six engine
  • Fully original vehicle

The Appeal

The Honda Gold wing was the first Japanese production motorbike to feature a water-cooled four-stroke engine and quickly obtained its near legendary status.

Produced from 1974 all the way to present times, the Gold Wing series extends over 6 generations and has since become regarded as one of the finer touring models money can buy.
This particular GL1500 belongs to the 4th generation of motorcycles, which ushered in a new wave of flat-six engines and numerous welcome updates.

Features like reverse gear, adjustable air suspension, rear speakers, passenger audio control, and more accessories set the GL1500 aside as a superbly equipped tourer, even to this day.

The History and Paperwork

  • Just 3 former keepers
  • 40,517 miles covered
  • Garage stored with drained fuel tank & carbs
  • V5C document present
This Honda has just 3 former keepers noted on the V5C document and has certainly been used as intended in the past, showing 40,517 miles today.

Throughout its time with the previous keeper, the bike was well-loved, responsible for many fault-free long-distance trips. In recent years, the bike has been seldom used, awaiting its time to shine once more from the comfort of a dry garage.

With this in mind, it should be noted that the vehicle will need light recommissioning to return to full glory.
The paperwork includes a collection of previous MOTs which help verify the displayed mileage, along with the V5C document, and the owner’s manual. Inside the manual, you will find a sticky note which documents service history from the previous owner, at regular intervals.

The vehicle will also include numerous items, including both open-face helmets with communication gear, the original toolkit, tyre repair kit, tyre inflator, new brake pads, and waterproofs.

The Exterior

  • Original exterior
  • Gorgeous colour
  • Great condition
  • Believed to have never suffered any damage
The fourth generation of Gold Wing bikes was the largest to date, with a longer wheelbase, larger windscreen, and more bodywork. The result, of course, is a very comfortable ride, and an incredibly handsome appearance.
This particular example is believed to be completely original, even down to the shiny exhaust. The gorgeous blue paintwork accompanies gold details beautifully and is in great condition for its age.

Perhaps the only defect other than minor front-end signs of use, is what appears to be white paint marks on the right-hand side of the vehicle. Wishing to not risk further damage, the current owner has not attended to the paint marks, instead suggesting a careful hand from the new owner to remove the marks without harming the stunning blue beneath.
All badging, lights, trim pieces and fairings are in great condition, showing very few of the signs of age/use you may expect of the bike.

If you’re looking for a gorgeous, original example of the GL1500, this is the one for you.

The Mechanics

  • 1520cc flat-six
  • 5-speed gearbox with reverse
  • Plenty of power
  • Adjustable rear air suspension
  • Packed with modern comforts and electronic features
In true Gold Wing fashion, this tourer is absolutely packed with all of the comforts you seek, ranging from adjustable air suspension, rear speakers, audio system with cassette player, heating, cruise control and more.

As the GL1500 packs a 1520cc flat-six, there’s also plenty of power to go around, especially as the vehicle has a curb weight of around 360kg.
As mentioned above, this particular example has been dry stored over the last few years and has not seen the road in quite some time. Prior to storing the vehicle, both the tank and carbs were drained of fuel, to prevent issues in the future.

Now, the vehicle is in need of light recommissioning to return to the road, perhaps in the form of a new battery, new tyres if desired and a full service.
Once back on the road, there is no doubt that this Honda will continue to be a dependable companion for long-distance trips for years to come.

Summary

If you are looking for one of the finer touring bikes ever produced, this GL1500 Gold Wing should be at the top of your list. Despite its age, it’s a very capable bike with buckets of power, plenty of comforts and electronic gizmos ahead of its time.

Although in need of a light refresh, this Honda will certainly live up to its legend out on the open road.
