The Appeal
An absolute icon of the era and at the cusp of the hot hatch craze, the Escort RS Turbo was the pinnacle in performance and styling being a favourite amongst true enthusiasts of the marque and for tuners.
Built off a significant heritage of the 80’s rally era it was built to compete in group A rallying and as a benchmark for the rest of the world to follow.
Finding an original, unmodified example that has not been heavily used is quite the challenge these days so an opportunity such as this is hugely appealing due to its true essence and authenticity.
This then is a fine opportunity to own an original, unmodified Ford Escort RS Turbo that offers a combination of heritage, performance, rarity, classic design, and investment potential. It represents a piece of automotive history and is a thrilling driving experience that appeals to enthusiasts and collectors alike.
The History and Paperwork
- The same owner since January 1994
- A vast collection of old MOT documents going back some 27 years
- All the original handbooks and pamphlets that would have come with the car from new
- A certificate for an aftermarket immobiliser
- Some service history by means of receipts and paperwork and 10 stamps in the service booklet
- Supplied by Dees of Croydon on the 2-8-1988
The Interior
- All totally untouched and original with wear commensurate of the mileage
- The drivers seat has been repaired due to failed stitching but otherwise the fabrics and bolsters are in good order. The drivers seat would simply benefit from a professional refit
- The original ford radio still remains
- The rear seats are virtually unused and have a very fresh and clean finish
- Weatherproof floor mats have been fitted keeping the carpets in fine order
- The dashboard shows no signs of sun damage with everything in its place and in good shape with only a scratch we noticed by the glove box handle
- All the switchgear is in excellent order, nothing missing or broken
- The instrument cluster is clear with no telltales illuminated on idle
- Factory optioned LCD trip and MPG computer fitted to the right of the speedometer
- All the glass appears to be original along with many vintage window stickers and tax discs
The Exterior
- Presented in Diamond White from new the bodywork is straight and totally unrestored with no evidence of significant repairs or historic damage
- Given the unrestored nature of the 35 year old bodywork there are significant areas of corrosion under the paintwork around the edges of many panels. None of this appears to impede the structure of the panels to any significant degree and has simply been maintained and touched up over the years keeping progress at bay
- There is a small crack on the near side front bumper corner
- A hairline crack on the off side rear stop lamp, with the rest of the lights appearing in fine order
- All original badges and RS Turbo decals
- All the original sill covers and over arch trims are in good order and well fitted
- The standard Turbo wheels appear to wear original paint and show few imperfections considering the age
- Optioned sunroof works as it should
The Mechanics
- Totally unmodified and original throughout, likely one of the last in such condition
- Very solid and clean underneath with no evidence of any structural corrosion
- The boot floor is original and retains clean paint
- A new timing belt was fitted at 90900 Miles
- The vendor assures us the car drives exactly as it should with good power
- The standard steel exhaust system is still fitted, even more evidence towards its originality
- The engine bay is ‘oily rag’ clean and has no modifications whatsoever
- Everything under the bonnet is in its correct place, all very neat and tidy with original heat shields and under bonnet work light
Summary
Despite all its imperfections, this RS Turbo is really just perfect! Having been in the loving care of a more mature member of society since 1995, this car has been enjoyed as Ford intended and has been preserved until now for a new keeper to enjoy. Whilst a full restoration would bring this car to an incredible standard, there is no reason why it cannot be enjoyed and admired in full originality too.
Examples in this state are virtually non-existent and this would be a fine addition to any collection as a true investment.
