THE BACKGROUND
Produced by Bentley Motors between 1985 - 1997 the Turbo R was a high performance, luxury saloon car. Between 1931 & 1998 Rolls-Royce owned Bentley and for most of this time the Bentley brand was neglected. There was very little to differentiate them from their Rolls-Royce siblings, until the Turbo R’s predecessor the Bentley Mulsanne Turbo was revealed at the 1982 Geneva Motor Show.
The Mulsanne Turbo injected life back into the brand with it’s 6.75L V8 Engine equipped with a Garret Turbocharger. Power increased by 50% from the standard Mulsanne and pushed out an eye widening 300hp.
In 1985 the Mulsanne was ditched and the ‘Bentley Turbo R’ was introduced. The revised model now featured fuel injection, improved suspension and anti lock brakes. Aesthetic modifications were also made such as round headlights, slimmer sports seats and bigger front spoiler.
Approximately 7,200 Turbo R’s were produced between 1985 - 1997 making it at the time one of Rolls-Royces/Bentleys best selling vehicles.
THE HISTORY
This Turbo R was purchased and then commissioned by the seller early 2021 after it had been barely used for 10 years. Not much is known prior to its current acquisition but it was certainly used and driven, with an impressive 200,000 miles being exceeded the car has conquered many roads as it was intended to.
THE PAPERWORK
There’s a substantial amount of paperwork, not all was present for photographing at the time. This includes pretty full service history spread across multiple service books, helping to back up the mileage. Invoices totalling around £20,000 for work carried out between 2000 - 2010 included the conversion of the air conditioning system to the R134 gas. In addition, further paperwork for recent work will be included.
THE EXTERIOR
As pictured there are areas that would need to be addressed in the near future, there is paint bubbling around the vehicle, mainly noticeable on the wheel arch and rear window. A few deep scratches are also noticeable on the rear quarter panel and a crack to the front spoiler. There’s nothing stopping the vehicle
from being used immediately but to keep the car going another 200,000 miles bodywork will be required.
THE INTERIOR
The cream leather seats are in pretty good order, no tears or damage present. A good leather cleaner will no doubt help the appearance slightly but overall the luxurious seats are great. The veneer dash and gauges are fabulous. The rear is just as great, fold down tables in a matching veneer add to the vehicle's superior class. There's no radio present so that will need to be rectified but the V8 soundtrack will keep you satisfied until then. The veneer door trims are the only areas that need attention, every door has some level of wear.
The milometer was replaced at 195,000 miles and currently displays 7,745. Documentation for this included. Inside the boot is clean and tidy matching carpet, with a tool kit present. No issues there!
The seller has also made us aware the vehicle has had some recent welding carried out to the sills and rear wheel arches.
THE MECHANICS
The car has been vigorously looked after in its life, it’s reached over 200,000 miles thanks to this. Everything works as it should apart from the cruise control and it starts with no hesitation. The hefty V8 sounds monstrous, it’s got a fantastic rumble.
Recent work by the seller including, new front brake discs and pads, rear brake pads and the handbrake linkage cleaned and adjusted. The nearside rear shock absorber has been replaced along with the hydraulic spheres for the braking system. The brake warnings all come on and go off as they should and the brakes work well. Tyres are all Michellins and to the correct spec. The fronts are dated this year and the backs were new old stock dated 2003. It has been MOT’d with the next required January 2022. It all runs and drives well and has also recently been serviced.
THE APPEAL
There’s a lot to love about this big British brute. This car changed Bentley for the better, it was the start of their modern big, powerful luxury vehicles which has led to some incredible motors since.
Even with the work required, this is still a huge opportunity to own a classic worth £100,000+ new. The huge V8 puts smiles on the faces of driver, passenger and passerby combined. You truly feel somebody sat anywhere in this vehicle, pure 80’s luxury.
