The Appeal

LIke us, you may be surprised by this fourth generation Celica. Who knew there was a factory-sanctioned cabriolet conversion? With just 200 built and only 50 believed remaining, that reaction perhaps isn’t surprising.
The Cabriolet was launched by Toyota in February 1987 exclusively for the UK market. Each car began life as a two door, booted, Japanese-market Celica GT coupe. The factory strengthened the screen pillars before despatching each car to British-owned coachbuilder Voll in Bavaria. This highly experienced convertible converter fitted the clever cabriolet roof. This arrangement delivered the choice of an open-topped targa configuration with removable roof panels or a full folding convertible top.
The high price likely kept sales below Toyota’s target of 250 per year. Production ended in 1990. This very tidy white car was amongst the first built and retains its correct Voll chassis plates. It was restored over the last two years, the work reportedly including extensive welding to remove rust and then a full repaint. The screen was replaced, wheels refurbished and diamond polished and a full new roof installed.
The mechanicals have been similarly worked over. The long list of work includes a new clutch, head gasket, shock absorbers, cambelt and new brake discs and pads.
The result is an intriguing classic with all the driving enjoyment of a fourth generation Celica and the versatility of a 2+2 drop top. With MOT to May 2025 this tidy Celica is ready for Spring.
