1987 Porsche 930 911 Turbo

Highlights

  • Low mileage of only 78,000

The Appeal

Enthusiasts always loved the classic 911 but it took the 930 to make it an icon. The whale tail, black Fuchs and, of course, that turbocharged flat six screamer are all part of what make this car one of motoring’s true greats.
The car’s widowmaker reputation means good, unmodified survivors are rare. This one is all those things.  It is also a very low mileage example with an impeccable service history undertaken by Porsche and well regarded specialists. Work has included an engine overhaul and new clutch 2,500 miles ago.
It is one of the later, desirable 3.3L 300bhp cars and is finished in the subtle shade of Marine Blue metallic with a highly preserved cream leather interior. Inside and out it is factory standard and beautifully well kept. The photographs tell the story - this is a very good example of an exceptional car.

Let's not beat about the bush - we’re in the presence of greatness here. The 930 is one of a handful of cars that define the last fifty years of motoring. This car proves the point, looking resplendent as it does in the photos.
Vibrant red may be the 930’s calling card but the Marine Blue metallic of this one presents a different side to the car’s character. It is pleasingly subtle, underplaying the evocative fixtures and fittings such as the whale tail, front lip spoiler, wide body and Fuchs alloys that define the Turbo.
Inside the tasteful theme continues with a cream leather cabin. Considering this car’s age, it is surprisingly well preserved - you will find few signs of use across the cabin, including the high-traffic areas like the driver’s seat and footwell. The same is true of the exterior.
The car is factory standard except for the useful upgrade to a modern Becker stereo.

The Mechanics

  • 3,299cc flat six 300bhp turbocharged engine
  • 4spd manual gearbox
  • Vendor says the car drives well
  • Direct and unassisted steering
  • We are told the car starts immediately and idles and runs well
  • Extensive history file of ongoing maintenance by Porsche and specialists
  • Highlights of the history file are shown in the photographs
  • No reported running or driving issues
  • No mechanical or running gear advisories on current MOT
  • Engine overhaul and clutch replaced 2,500 miles ago as shown in photos
By the time this car left the showroom in 1987, Porsche had - in typical fashion - engineered the 930 to virtual perfection. These later cars got the larger 3,3L flat six with 300bhp and improvements to power deliver that made them somewhat less ‘hedge orientated’ than their forebears. The result is a surprisingly civilised car but one that, in true 911, fashion, requires attention and learning to extract its full capabilities. And that, in a nutshell, is really why you want one.
This car’s very low mileage of 78,000 is supported by a vast history file that you can peruse in the photographs. Highlights include an engine overhaul and new clutch in 2010 - it has covered only 2,500 miles since - and more recently a spark control box. The work has solely been undertaken by Porsche - there are 16 service stamps to 2016 - and subsequently well-regarded specialists like Charles Ivey. Perhaps no surprise then that the current MOT carries no advisories.
The vendor tells us:
“I bought the car because it was my dream car as a teenager. I am unable to find the time to drive it. These cars are made to be driven. So I feel it may be cared for by someone who has the time for it. Always turns heads. I have had offers to take it off of me by way of notes left on the car.”
