The Appeal

In the late 1970s Porsche had something of an existential wobble.  US legislation was making the 911's future look questionable and the firm decided it needed some fresh thinking.

The result was the 928, a more conventional front-engined Porsche aimed squarely at the lucrative GT market.

Sadly the 911's revival - thanks mainly to the Turbo model - pushed the 928 into the wilderness for a long time.  But in recent years enthusiasts have rediscovered it, valuing its superlative power and balance and, of course, those space-age looks.  Values have responded accordingly.

This 1987 Series 4 Porsche 928S has recently received a round of thorough mechanical reconditioning in the hands of 928 specialist Paul Lacey.  It is a low mileage car with the added reassurance of a long MOT.  Great GT cars don't get much better than the 928 and this one looks well specified and cared for,

The Interior

  • Original all-blue leather interior in well kept condition
  • Recently restored steering wheel, sunroof seals
  • Original seats treated with Meguiars leather conditioner
  • Factory options including cruise control, lumbar support, electric memory seat and sunroof
  • Light water damage to the headlining
  • Some water ingress to the boot that the buyer may wish to address
  • Some minor wiring issues noted such as the door mirrors no longer electrically adjusting
  • Passenger door only locks from the inside central locking
  • Decommissioned AC unsure why it no longer works, could be a fuse but has not been diagnosed
  • Temperature Gauge works intermittently
The 928 interior was a serious step-change from the 911 and marked by a particularly late 70s, space-age approach.  It has endured and looks very welcoming, as the smart interior of this car demonstrates.

It is also a very luxurious place to be, with plenty of electric toys, full leather and high quality fittings, as you would expect from a Porsche.

The cabin of this car presents very well, as the photographs show.  There are some age-related points to note but it has held up well for what is a 36 year old car.  There are some light cracks in the dashboard - a common 928 problem - and while most of the electrics operate correctly, the mirrors and boot release do not.

The Exterior

  • Originally Venetian Blue and believed resprayed around 10 years ago
  • Appears to still be Venetian Blue, or a very close version of it
  • Some light scratches visible but presents very well for age and mileage
  • Twin arm windscreen wiper motor refurbished in June 2023
  • 17” ‘Cup 2’ wheels from a GTS (7.5J front, 9J rear)
  • Factory S4 rear wing
In its own way the 928 shape is as distinctive as the 911's, a sinuous design that still looks fresh and modern nearly 50 years on from its introduction.  The Series 4 lightly updated the aesthetics to deliver a more purposeful, wider stance.

The light grey paintwork of this car - it appears to be its factory correct Venetian Blue - suits the understated style of these svelte GTs.  The Porsche Cup alloys work particularly well and are a popular upgrade by 928 owners.

We understand that the car was resprayed around 10 years ago.  The paintwork appears to be a good finish - there are some light scratches around the car but none detract from the overall appeal.  There is no visible corrosion and no structural advisories on the last MOT.

The Mechanics

  • Original 320hp 5.0 V8
  • 4-speed Automatic
  • Maintained by 928 specialist Paul Lacey
  • Engine fan runs well without any overheating problems
Notable maintenance:
  • Cam belt changed June 2022
  • Torque tube overhauled in June 2022 at cost of £3,426.60
  • Fuel lines repaired in May 2021
  • New bearings to transmission torque converter housing
  • Repaired gear selector cable
  • New supporting exhaust parts
  • New water pump
  • New air conditioning and alternator belts
  • MAF system rebuilt and recalibrated with two year warranty by JDS Porsche in April 2023
  • ABS wiring repaired
  • Other electric repairs by Paul Lacey including digital clock, radio and interior lighting
  • Recent invoice from Paul Lacey for below works totalling £2,568.44
  • New CV boots
  • Rebuilding throttle body
  • Refurbishing fuel injection and ignition systems
  • Reconditioned Inlet manifold
The mammoth 5litre 32V V8 at the heart of the 928 is part of the compelling appeal of this superlative GT car.  Very quick and with prodigious torque, it combines with the car's excellent weight distribution to deliver a very surefooted, fuss-free and entertaining driving experience.

When buying a 928 there are certain things to look for and a recently reconditioned torque tube is one of them.  This car has had that, together with a raft of other work undertaken by specialists, most notable Paul Lacey who concentrates on these cars.  The other work is listed above and indicates a very meticulous approach to maintenance by the seller, a 928 enthusiast.

Summary

For a long time the 928 sat in the shadow of its better known sibling.  That is changing as enthusiasts rediscover one of the best GT cars of its generation.

This S4 comes with a desirable colour scheme and evidence of fastidious maintenance, particularly covering important 928 areas.  Equipped with a long MOT and low mileage it offers the buyer a very usable, hugely rewarding GT experience.
