The Appeal
Over the years, Porsche has built a 911 to suit virtually every sports car enthusiast. Enthusiasts all have their preferences. In a crowded field, the 3.2litre Carrera with G50 box must be one of the most desirable of the original, air-cooled cars.
These cars got a power hike to 230bhp while the improved gearbox made the business of stirring all that power considerably more appealing.
If you’re going to buy a 1980s 911 then Guards Red with Fuchs and Whale Tail must surely be high on most specification lists. This 3.2 G50 car has all those compelling features, plus a Targa top to broaden its all-weather versatility.
It is also a very low mileage car, one that has clearly been sparingly used and carefully maintained by its long term keeper. These cars are getting close to MOT and tax exempt Historic Vehicle status. This one comes with a usefully long, advisory-free MOT to April 2025.
If you’re looking for a 911 with a desirable factory specification in the right colour with low mileage and good maintenance, you may have just found it.

- Red seat piping neatly suites with the exterior paintwork
- Cabin is unmodified and very original with good fittings and switchgear
The quality of the air cooled 911 means that even cars used as intended appear highly preserved decades after they left the factory. This example ticks that box, but largely because it has been so sparingly and carefully used.
Inside and out the sense of a much-loved car prevails. It is classically finished in Guards Red with the desirable Whale Tail, front lip spoiler and black Fuchs adding to the appeal. Inside there are velour pinstripe seats in black with red piping. You will struggle to find signs of this car’s 37 years across the exterior and interior, likewise modifications from the factory specification. It all adds up to a very honest and appealing car.
The Mechanics
- Uprated factory standard 3,164cc flat six Carrera specification engine
- Delivers 230bhp in European specification with 0-60mph in 6.1secs
- Early car with improved 5spd G50 gearbox
- Well maintained car in hands of long term owner
- MOT and service history support the low displayed mileage
- No reported running or driving issues
Outside of the lairy Turbo, for everyday use the air cooled Carrera is the performance version to lust after. The improved and more powerful 3.2L arrived in 1984, based on the stronger alloy 930 motor. In this car it delivers scintillating performance - 230bhp and 0-60mph in a shade over 6secs.
But the real treat here is perhaps that this car was an early adopter of the G50 gearbox, the unit that many enthusiasts rate as a step change in the evolution of the classic 911. Its much-improved shift fully released the potential of these remarkable cars.
This low mileage Carrera has been carefully maintained by its long term seller and arrives on the market in very good order with no known running or driving issues.
