1987 Peugeot 205 GTi 1.6

Highlights

  • Incredible original condition
  • No restoration needed
  • Well preserved by discerning owners
  • A true 80’s hot hatch experience

The Background

The Peugeot 205 first came about in 1983, when it was produced as to replace the 104 supermini. It was also created to fill the gap between the 104 and the larger 305, the 205 was designed in-house at Peugeot by Gerard Welter with interior finishes designed by Paul Bracq. Peugeot very quickly realised the small, lightweight platform had great sporting potential and only one year later in 1984, they released the GTi.
Certainly a serious hot hatch, it was big competition for the other hot hatches of the time. The 1.9 litre engine was a stroked version of the 1.6, meaning while it had more torque it wasn’t as quick revving, and even today, opinions are still divided as to whether the peaky power delivery of the 1.6 variant, or the increased torque of the 1.9 is better.
Whatever your preference, in either form the 205 GTi is easily one of the greatest hot hatches of all time and offers an incredible driving experience and sublime handling.

The History

This lovely 205 GTi has had four keepers in its lifetime, with the first of these having covered the majority of the milage on the car. Since then it has covered only a few thousand miles per year as evidenced by the MOT certificates. Despite its age and mileage the car has been kept in exceptional condition better fitting a car of a fraction of this milage. The car is completely base specification, no electric windows, no leather, no sun roof, no air conditioning, no bells or whistles.

However as the car is in original condition it really feels like a true time capsule, and the simplicity of this further enhances the driving experience and feel of this bare-bones, 1980’s hot hatch.
In 2015 the car was given a fresh cam belt and water pump.
Towards the end of 2020 the car was treated to a well deserved and very thorough service with oils (engine and gearbox), filters, rubbers and hoses, coolant flush, fresh but original specification exhaust, clutch kit, brakes overhauled and more. All of this work was carried out to original specifications to ensure the originality of the car. Clearly all four keepers have worked hard over the many years to preserve this car to exceptional standards.

The Paperwork

V5 is present. Also included are detailed invoices for the work carried out, MOT certificates, the original Kenwood radio manual, and the original owners manuals.

The Interior

The interior is fantastic, all original, with very very few age related marks. It is finished in a very sporty red on grey grid pattern fabric with black bolsters and sides with red stitching. The Red carpets and immaculate lower door card fabrics really give the car that GTi feel and ties in with the red badging and stripes perfectly.

There is some discolouration to the headlining fabric, however it is likely that with a good clean this could be improved or rectified. The plastics and switches are all in incredible condition, certainly exceptional for a vehicle of this milage. And the black floor mats with GTi branding set it off nicely. The Kenwood cassette tape radio is sure to revive your 80’s tunes to complete the time capsule experience!

The Exterior

The Alpine white exterior is very nice, it would take very little to bring this car up to concours condition. As far as the vendor knows, the car is still on original paint, and there is certainly no evidence of the car ever having been painted which is amazing considering the condition.

The black plastic trims and bumpers have been well looked after and have not greyed, and the red stripes and detailing are excellent as well. The headlights are nice and clear with no signs of condensation or clouding, and the glass is all in great condition. The silver Speedline wheels are also in perfect condition and are shod with very fitting Michelin MXV2 tyres which perfectly suit the car.

There has been a small repair to the lower section of the offside front wheel arch, but this has been carried out well and would only take polishing work to really finish it off. Overall, an exceptional exterior.

The Mechanics

Mechanically the car wants for nothing, everything that has needed done has been taken care of with invoices showing the work done. The car has not needed any major work and has merely been very well serviced and looked after with such things as fresh batteries, an alternator, new timing belt and water pump, brakes have been fully overhauled with new hoses, discs, pads, handbrake cables. It has also had a brand new exhaust system fitted to standard specification.

It is not the cleanest example under the bonnet as the vendor was just content to keep it in perfect working order, however should one want to take it to the next level all it would require is a good clean. There is some small areas of rust showing through on the underside of the bonnet’s original paint, these could do with some attention however no major work is needed. A truly fantastic example of the 205 GTi.

The Appeal

A genuine time capsule car, this base spec, sprightly 1.6 205GTi is a true drivers car. This is one of the best examples of originality you will ever come across, with the majority of these cars having had major restorations over the years. A rare opportunity to own a car this original and one that is sure to be an incredible drive and transport you back to the pinnacle of 80’s hot hatch motoring!
