THE APPEAL

When the Mercedes-Benz R107 launched in 1971, it set new standards for luxury convertibles that rivals could only dream of matching. Its elegant and classy styling was an immediate hit and its 18 year production run was a testament to its ever lasting appeal. With its German build quality and robust engines, the R107 was a dependable roadster that could be comfortably used as a daily driver. Today the R107 is a classic that has aged superbly with demand strong for well cared for examples. The 1987 example on sale with Car and Classic is a sought after 300 SL model that has been with its current owner for 27 years.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • First registered on the 1st August 1987

  • Odometer shows 62,442 miles which is confirmed by the stamped service book and the MOT records
  • The car is supplied with the original Owners Manual and book pack
  • The Mercedes comes with its stamped service book with the most recent service carried on 3rd July 2019 at 62,247 miles. The car has done just under 200 miles since.
  • There are also a good number of maintenance invoices going back to 1997, aall with the current owner who has had the car serviced at the Mercedes main dealer in Canterbury and also at a Mercedes specialist in Kent
  • The current owner acquired the car in June 1996 so has owned it for 27 years
  • Included in the history file is the factory order card which shows the order specification for this R107

THE INTERIOR

  • The cream leather seats and trim are in very good condition with only a few marks and signs of wear present. There is a small nick in the drives seat base and some marks on the trim around the rear shelf but these could be easily repaired.
  • The rest of the interior is in very nice shape indeed with the dashboard in very good condition
  • The steering has only minimal signs of wear and the gauges are all bright and clean
  • The wood in the centre console is in good condition with only minor marks present
  • The headliner for the removable hardtop and the fabric convertible top are in very good condition
  • The owner confirms that all electrical items work as they should as do the electric windows which go up and down as they should. The owner goes on to add that the only item that doesn’t work is the dash clock which recently stopped working.

THE EXTERIOR

  • This Mercedes 300 SL is finished in the classic shade of Signal Red with a matching hardtop and a black convertible hood
  • The paint presents very well and has recently been detailed
  • There are some minor scratches and stone chips present which are shown in the photos, which could be addressed by a competent bodyshop
  • There is a paint chip on the right rear wheel arch which requires treating and touching in
  • There is a small area of rust starting on the front left edge of the sill/wheel arch
  • And there is a small area of rust starting on the lower edge of the drivers door and some bubbling on the edge of the bonnet near the chrome grill surround
  • There is some oxidisation in the red paint on the right side of the C pillar area, which is hidden when the hardtop is installed.
  • There is a small chip in the front centre of the hardtop
  • These blemishes do not detract from what is a very nice and straight example and they could easily be addressed over time whilst enjoying the car
  • The convertible top is in good condition with no rips or tears evident
  • The windscreen has a crack which is noted in last years MOT history report. The owner has stated that a new windscreen is being fitted and will be installed prior to sale
  • The 300 SL’s original alloy wheels are in good shape. They are showing signs of wear around the edges and would benefit from a refurb which would make them as good as new.
  • The underside appears to be in good clean condition

THE MECHANICS

  • 3.0 litre straight six engine which is mated to a 4 speed automatic gearbox
  • The owner confirms the 300 SL drives very well with plenty of power and cruises comfortably on the motorway
  • They state it has been used on trips to France on a number of occasions in the past, with the automatic gearbox and Cruise Control making it an effortless journey.
  • It was last serviced on the 3rd July 2019 at 62,247 miles
  • Additional work was carried out on the 20th August 2019 at 62,334 miles, with the replacement of the front subframe bushes and the fitting of a replacement brake fluid reservoir cap, along with a fuel tank vapour reservoir to engine hose.

SUMMARY

There is no denying the appeal of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. It is a fabulous design that looks as good today as it did when it rolled off the showroom floor in 1987. This example has clearly been looked after and has been used sparingly by its current owner of the last 27 years. With some of the cosmetics sorted this sought after 300 SL would make a very worthy addition to any collection.
