The Appeal
When the R107 was launched as the successor to the W113 Pagoda SL in 1971, few – including Mercedes themselves – would have suspected that the new model would last until 1989? Combining glamorous looks, practicality and reliability with the thrills of top-down motoring, it’s perhaps no surprise that the R107 survived in the Mercedes line-up for as long as it did.
Post-1985 R107s with the powerful, yet frugal, straight six engines are particularly sought-after, featuring the late-run upgrades: improved suspension, galvanised chassis and added body strengthening, plus the chin spoiler. ‘D251 XCF’ is one of these more desirable late cars being a 1987 model. Well-preserved and in original condition this SL offers the new owner a chance to enjoy an attractive, comfortable and stylish all-weather roadster.
The History and Paperwork
- MOT valid until June 2024
- Very good service history
- Full VDI check carried out by the vendor
This SL was first registered by Normand of Park Lane in 1987 and its Dealer numberplates and rear window sticker are present, as is the book pack containing a copy of an owner's manual, original radio manual and service book with 24 stamps.
The Interior
- Smart blue ‘sport check’ seats
- Original dashboard and centre console
- Rear seats
- Original radio
The car’s interior is in mostly original condition throughout and has stood the test of time very well. There are of course some age-related marks, but nothing especially noticeable. The vendor has recently had the driver’s seat refurbished but everything else is largely untouched. The seat fabric is in excellent condition, the door panels look good, with very few marks or stains.
The dials, dashboard and centre-console are all in good condition given their age, we noted a small piece of veneer missing on the passenger side and a few cracks in the veneer on the glove box, small parts which are readily available.
In the boot, the carpet shows some staining and has few signs of wear, while there is an unused first aid kit, tool kit, warning triangle, jack and spare wheel. We noticed the lid drops without much resistance, the vendor says this will need a cantilever replaced.
The original period radio still raises and lowers the electric aerial – remember them?
The Exterior
- Original hard top
- Dark blue soft-top
- Lovely Diamond metallic colour scheme
The R107’s lines have held up well; it’s still an attractive car that belies its age. The paintwork, (Metallic Diamond Blue), is very much in fashion since it is so evocative of the eighties. In combination with the colour-matched soft top and hardtop this really is a nice-looking car.
The car’s bodywork is generally good, but there are some small age-related imperfections. There is a small blister on the rear bumper chrome, and some evidence of relatively recent paintwork. We could find no evidence of any corrosion at all. All four alloy wheels look good, having been recently refurbished. The tyres are generally good. The brightwork has some patina which is to be expected from an original car such as this.
The dark blue soft top is original and very presentable with no tears.
The Mechanics
- 2962 cc straight-six engine
- Reportedly starts and runs very well
- Recently serviced
- MOT valid until June 2024
SL engines have a reputation for robustness and reliability, having covered just over 90,000 miles since 1987, it should offer many more miles of trouble-free motoring. Having just been serviced with a few new parts added including the exhaust silencer.
The car starts readily, it pulls away as it should, gear changes are smooth and quiet and there’s nothing to suggest any issues. Under the bonnet, there are few signs of the car’s age and mileage, and it’s clear that the car has been carefully maintained. Similarly, as far as one can see under the car, everything is in good order and there are no leaks or corrosion. Spare keys are present.
Summary
The R107 has a reputation as a safe, robust and reliable luxury two-seater; it’s a car that was built to high standards. The post-1985 300SL is regarded as the best car to have, with cruising ability and excellent refinement as well as reasonable fuel economy.
For all-weather motoring, this example has to be a very good choice. The new owner can enjoy the car as is or, with very little effort, take it up a level. The choice is there, either way we are sure that the lovely colour scheme, low miles, desirable model year and engine all make for a smart purchase.
