1987 Honda RS 125 RF

Highlights

  • Original condition Honda RS 125 RF
  • Well presented
  • Ready to race

THE APPEAL

Designed by Honda for the sole purpose of racing at club, national and world championship levels. Many famous racers have grown up on these bikes before progressing onto larger CC bikes.
This 1987 Honda RS 125 is in its original condition apart from a cosmetic freshen-up a few years ago, but as you can see it is in excellent condition and does not look to have had a hard life by any means. Finished in the Carstol/ Honda colours, the bike just screams out 80s era at you and best of all, it is ready to race, parade or show. This particular bike was produced when Honda moved over to the aluminium box frame but retained the spoked wheels rather than the later type.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • HRC reprinted Workshop Manual / Parts List
  • Spare digital tacho
  • Spare carburettor
  • Other spares included
  • Custom frame to hold/work on the bike
  • Stands included
The Honda was purchased by the vendor a couple of years ago and has simply been enjoyed for what it is. The vendor has had the odd go on it, but in the main, he has enjoyed tinkering and maintaining it to ensure it is kept running as it should.

THE CONDITION

  • Original colour scheme
  • Well presented
  • Original Wheels
  • New rear race compound tyre included
Castrol colours are probably as fitting as you can get for the 80s race scene, and the Honda doesn’t let you down with the original colour scheme. The bike has retained the original wheel at the front, which is clearly stamped D.I.D Japan. There is a small amount of tarnishing to the aluminium, but this is very light and could easily be polished off.

The Avon tyre is in good condition, and the grooved brake disc shows no signs of excessive wear. The fork bodies look to be in good order and have been lightly polished for a clean look. Further up, the grips and bars are in good order with minimal wear, and the switchgear is reported to work as it should.  The instruments are working correctly, with the rev counter capable of taking more than 12,000 rpm from the 125cc and a water gauge just to ensure things don’t get too hot.
The fairing is in good order and believed to have been repainted just over two years ago. Matching the fairing, the fuel tank is free from any dings or dents and finished in the same Castrol colours. The small fibreglass seat section is in good condition with no splits or cracks, and the foam seat has been replaced.

THE MECHANICS

  • Original 125 engine
  • Six-speed gearbox
  • Aluminium frame
  • Wonderful bike to ride
The RS 125 was made on the later style frame, just as Honda moved from the tubed style to the boxy polished aluminium. The new frame was lighter and stronger, giving the bike a more agile feel and razor-sharp steering as you throw it around the corners. There is a small amount of wear to the underside of the foot pegs, possibly caused by being on a stand or transported around.
The water-cooled, two-stroke 125cc engine is reported to have been well maintained and runs as it should, and the bike is set up and ready to go. The bike has had a new chain, sprockets, bearings, and control cables. Fitted with a six-speed gearbox, it is reported to go through the gears as you would expect. When it comes to stopping, the braking system has been fully rebuilt with new pistons and seals, ensuring everything is in order.

SUMMARY

This is a great period-correct 80s classic race bike. The RS 125 has been used by many great riders to hone their skills on the circuit before moving up to the larger CC bikes. This is what makes the RS 125 RF such a fantastic bike to own; whether you want to race it, use it for parade laps, show it or simply have it on display in your shop, office or home.
Whatever you decide to do, you will get great pleasure from owning the fantastic Honda RS 125 RF.
