The Appeal

Perhaps it was Bodie and Doyle, maybe it was our love of big-bonneted coupes. Whatever it was, when Europe’s love of the Capri dwindled in the mid-80s, here in Britain we kept on buying. And Ford rewarded us with this final swansong: the 280, affectionately known as the ‘Brooklands’ because of its exclusive Brooklands Green paintwork.
There wasn’t much to differentiate the 280 from its 2.8i Injection Special predecessor, but there didn’t really need to be. These final cars got the SVE-tuned Cologne V6, a vital LSD to tame that wayward rear end and a 5spd gearbox. The Brooklands also got a full leather Recaro interior.
According to the seller, Ford planned to build a final run of 500 Capri's to be called the Capri 500 but changed plans and produced a final run of 1038, badged "280." The vendor tells us this is number 689 of that final run. Its VIN number and V5 check out as a genuine ‘280.’
It was subject to a £25,000 restoration in 2017 that covered a full body renovation and respray plus improvement to the interior, including a leather-lined dashboard. Under the bonnet a replacement low mileage 2.8L V6 was fitted and other improvements made, including Spax and Bilstein shocks and SAMCO hoses.
The car has only covered 3,000 miles since the work was completed. The result is a car in very good order. The current keeper acquired it planning to hold onto it, but circumstances have changed. He has serviced and maintained it with that in mind so it runs as well as it looks. There is MOT to September 2025 with no advisories.
A good Brooklands is the Holy Grail of the many Capri enthusiasts. Don’s miss this very good example.
The vendor says:
“Full body restoration including a motor swap and suspension renewal just over 3000 miles ago. The bodywork is immaculate both underneath and on top. The car drives perfectly and has happily covered a 300 mile round trip. No known mechanical faults with the car.”
“The best thing about owning one of these cars is that fact that many many people seem to have a fond Capri story somewhere in their life and it puts a big smile on many faces, not just mine. Sorry to see it go.”
