The Appeal
The XJ40’s arrival in showrooms was somewhat delayed - it had been in development since the early 1970s - but when it did appear it was a very new type of Jaguar. The firm’s first all-new saloon for nearly 20 years blended classical styling with very modern technological touches.
The firm’s engineers also executed a clever trick. The original XJ had set the benchmark for smooth-riding four doors, even beating Rolls-Royce at the cossetting conveyance game. The XJ40 was entirely new but just as good.
Under the bonnet was the excellent AJ6 straight six engine, a motor known for its durability and smoothness.
All of which matters because here is the chance to buy what is essentially a brand new XJ40. It has had one registered keeper from new who barely used it because he acquired a Mercedes-Benz shortly after. It is the ultra luxurious Daimler model with improved leather and wood and has covered a mere 4,666 miles from new.
The condition reflects the sparing use, the well kept bodywork mixing with supple leathers. With interest in these cars on the rise, this is a fantastic opportunity to acquire a genuine classic unicorn.
