1986 Porsche 928 S2 Auto

***Vendor supplied images***

Highlights

  • 4.7-litre V8 engined 928 S2, combining sports car performance with the comfort and luxury of a grand tourer
  • Benefiting from 15 years spent in the warm and dry climate of Spain
  • Recently serviced by vendor with documented cambelt and tensioner change

The Appeal

Envisaged as a replacement for the 911 and developed as their new flagship model, the 928 was Porsche’s first ever clean-sheet car design and aimed to combine sports car performance with GT levels of comfort and refinement.
A technical tour de force, the 928 combined ground-breaking design with cutting edge mechanicals and subsequently won European Car of the Year on its debut in 1978.
Offered here for auction is a 1986 S2 example featuring the 4.7-litre version of Porsche’s fabulous M28 engine mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. Capable of delivering 306 BHP to the rear wheels and blessed with near perfect 50 / 50 weight distribution courtesy of its transaxle, the 928 could out-perform the equivalent 911 Turbo of the day.
Coming from 15 years in the sunny and dry climes of Spain, this particular 928 now presents in a good usable condition and benefits from a recent service under its vendor.
An appreciating classic, this 928 S2 would certainly make for a highly enjoyable daily driver in its current condition whilst also offering the opportunity for further improvement in the years to come.

The History and Paperwork

  • V5 present
  • MOT valid until 09/03/2024
  • Supplied with invoice relating to recent service work which included cambelt and tensioner replacement

The Interior

  • Classic black leather interior with contrasting red piping and matching black carpets
  • Spacious 2 + 2 configuration with the ability to carry two children in comfort or two adults for short distances
  • With the rear seats in their folded position, the 928 has a very practical and useful large flat rear storage area which can be easily accessed via the rear hatch.
  • Presented in a condition commensurate with its age and mileage, the interior of this 928 has held up well. Whilst some wear and minor damage is noted over the driver’s seat bolster, the rest of the 928’s interior leather presents quite well and with a little TLC could look excellent.
  • Supremely comfortable accommodation is provided for the driver and their passenger with electrically adjustable seats, electric windows and a powered sunroof
  • Superb Porsche driving position with bank of clear gauges housed in a binnacle which moves with adjustment of the steering wheel position!
  • Fitment of a later CD stereo system with external input connectivity
  • Vendor reports that internal instrumentation is functional apart from the odometer which appears to be stuck at the presented current mileage
  • Internal equipment is reported to be functioning as expected however the air conditioning system is untested

The Exterior

  • Presented in that classic Porsche shade of Guards Red, this 928 looks every bit the 1980’s thoroughbred performance GT
  • A pre-facelift model, this 928 features the original and more angular ‘shark nose’ front end, giving it we think a more aggressive performance appearance
  • Styled by Wolfgang Mobius, the 928 still looks modern even today, nearly 50 years after its release, a testament to its superb design and styling
  • Benefiting from  a number of aluminium body panels fitted in order to aid lightness and performance, this Porsche has generally aged well over the past 40 years
  • Looking over the exterior of the car there are some minor paint and bodywork imperfections noted, for example some signs of aluminium oxidation around the front nearside wheel arch and some corrosion around the rear wing where it meets the integrated rear bumper
  • Additionally, the paint is showing some signs of age in places, however the overall condition could be described as presentable

The Mechanics

  • Featuring a 4.7-litre V8 delivering 306 BHP to the rear wheels via an automatic 4-speed transaxle
  • Benefiting from a recent service with a cambelt and tensioner change by the vendor
  • Reported to pull strongly under acceleration, the 928 still feels quick even by today’s standards
  • The vendor reports that the Porsche performs well out on the road and changes smoothly throughout its gears
  • Brakes and suspension are reported to feel good with no knocking over uneven road surfaces and the Porsche pulls up cleanly when required
  • Fitted with a galvanised chassis from new, the 928 is reported to be in sound condition underneath, a fact supported by its recent MOT report

Summary

Undoubtedly an appreciating classic, the Porsche 928 succeeded in delivering sensational levels of sports car performance combined with the refinement of luxury GT motoring. Blessed with a powerful V8 engine and near-perfect weight distribution, even by the standards of today the 928 is still a highly capable grand tourer.
Presented here in a usable condition, this is a 928 that would make for a great daily driver ‘as is’, or with a little bit of time and investment, could be taken to the next level.
