The Appeal

The ultimate 911. Surely, you might think, it’s just a turbo without the turbo… But honestly, that’s kind of the beauty about it. The Turbo models were notorious for being difficult, aggressive, and often made you feel like you were tiptoeing around broken glass when you were touching the accelerator. So it made sense that Porsche developed the same car and styling, but without the turbo… And viola, you have the stunning 911 that everyone lusts after, and it doesn’t want to throw you into a barrier if you glance at the right pedal.
This particular example has been owned by a string of Porsche enthusiasts who have taken the utmost care when in custodianship of the vehicle, treating it to proper servicing with no expense spared and even a glass out respray in the factory colour to restore the cars devilishly good looks - not to mention the professionally retrimmed interior in black leather. The plethora of paperwork bonded to this vehicle is proof enough that you possess a vehicle with a rich line of careful and loving owners. And this is exactly that.
The Super Sport also acquired some of the performance aspects of its Turbo brother, including the axle bracket stabilisers as well as the much improved brakes.

  • Original driver's manual in fantastic condition

  • Plethora of service invoices from Porsche and Porsche specialists
  • Fantastic service history present

The Interior

  • Fully professionally retrimmed in gorgeous black leather
  • Leather door cards in lovely condition
  • Both front seats in admirable condition, with very gentle signs of wear
  • All black carpets gorgeously preserved
  • Momo Prototipo three-spoke steering wheel in like-new conditions
  • Gauge cluster magnificently presented and functional
  • Porsche CR-22 radio
  • Rear seats remain in amazing condition
The interior of this Super Sport has had some rather lovely retrimming professionally done at some point in a previous ownership, although it would be extremely hard to tell if it wasn’t for the Certificate of Authenticity pointing out that the original interior  was Brown Leatherette with part leather seats, with beige/brown inserts. Although, we do think that the black leather is a much more fitting interior, instead of the “old man beige” it wore previously.
Starting stepping into the driver's seat, you’re greeted with the exceptionally well presented leather seats which show a very minimal amount of use, through the usual light creasing which is characteristic of any leather - but the lack of signs of wear is something that could be said about the entirety of this lavish interior. Sitting in the aforementioned drivers seat, a near brand-new Momo Prototipo steering wheel presents itself in front of you with white stitching and a silver three-spoke face, with the horizontal gauge cluster positioned right behind it showing no unwelcome warning lights with completely functional gauges.
Moving across the dashboard we find that the original Porsche CR-22 radio remains in place in fantastic condition, as well as the light controls and the heater control panel. Slightly further down in the centre console, just in front of the gear lever, the hazard and demister buttons remain functional and easily readable.
Pushing the seats forward and shimmying into the back seats, everything back here seems almost untouched. Leather remains in outstanding condition and the carpets which run between the seats also look absolutely fantastic. Although, this isn’t much of a surprise, as these “2+2” style of seats are often left unscathed due to the lack of space to fit anything remotely human into them. At best they’re just a bit of luxurious storage space.
Everywhere you look in this 911, you’re left pleasantly surprised and filled with admiration. Everything from the leather, to the plastics, the headlining, door cards are all in fantastically maintained condition - more evidence of a loving custodian over the years. Not to mention, this is one of the very limited 226 UK supplied right hand drive models - so you won’t get many chances to see an example as lovely as this.

The Exterior

  • Guards Red paint
  • Full glass out respray in a previous ownership to the factory paint colour, excellently done
  • Original wider rear arches as part of the Super Sport option
  • Iconic ‘tea tray’ raised decklid spoiler
  • Gorgeous original Fuchs wheels, black faces with polished lips
  • Body panels of factory fitment
  • Plastic trims all exceptionally well maintained
  • Front and rear lights remain functional and clear
  • Optional sunroof in functional condition
Undoubtedly, one of the coolest Porsche body shapes to emerge from the 80’s, and in arguably one of the best colours too. The Guards red paintwork was completely redone at some point in a previous ownership, however it has been done to an exceptional standard and matches exactly to the interior floors.
Starting at the front of the 911, the paintwork up here is very well kept with only some very minor signs of stone chips, and a small scratch visible on the black protective bar which runs between the indicator lenses - but really that's about it as far as imperfections. All of the light lenses appear to be in fantastic shape, and all remain functional and free of any damage or cracks .Panel gaps between the bonnet and the front arches remain of factory fitment and the Porsche crest remains proudly up front and centre in lovely condition.
Scooting around to the side of the vehicle and getting the flaws out of the way first, all we can find here is that the driver's side door handle could do with a lick of paint due to some scratching from use over the years. And that about wraps up the flaws! Paintwork here seems to remain in fantastic condition, the black trim which runs along the lower of the vehicle is very much the same and the black protective vinyl on the wide rear arches look to be in well kept condition too. Panel gaps are perfect and there doesn’t appear to be any signs of dings or dents throughout the entirety of the car.
All four wheels appear to be in outstanding condition, the black centre faces remain a high level of gloss with no visible chips or flaws, and the polished lips look to be in lovely shape too with no visible corrosion or curb rash, all wrapped in Continental Sport Contact 2 tyres with a good amount of tread left on them ready for the new custodian to enjoy.
Moving around to the rear of the vehicle we’re instantly drawn to the iconic tea tray rear spoiler and the large “Porsche” banner which runs between the two tail lights. Everything back here is in tremendous order with no signs of damage anywhere, paintwork looks to be in fantastic condition as do the black pieces of trim on the rear bumper and around the lights,
Overall, the exterior of this 911 is absolutely stunning, with fantastic paintwork and original bodywork with no signs of any damage, it’s not difficult to tell that it’s lived quite the pampered life over the years - and it’s extremely deserving of it.

The Mechanics

  • 3.2L flat 6 cylinder engine
  • 5-speed manual transmission
  • Rear wheel-drive configuration
  • Rear engined
  • Beautifully maintained engine bay
  • Recently passed MOT with flying colours
  • Excessive mechanical work carried out in 2013 by Project Nine
  • Great service history
  • Waxoyled when new
Like any 911, performance and driving experience is where these cars shine the most. Featuring a number of performance upgrades from the Turbo variant, the Super Sport offers one of the most rewarding driving experiences you can get, as well as one of the best sounding too thanks to that naturally aspirated flat-six sitting right behind you. Of course, some swear by the Turbo models with their tyre-breaking power, but arguably give a more uncertain driving experience due to the snappy nature of the rear end. The Super Sport gives you all the looks without the excessive “watch out for that pole” mentality when driving.
Back in 2013 when the current owner acquired the vehicle, it was sent off to Project Nine, a very well known Porsche specialist, for three whole months to overhaul the mechanical aspects which needed any attention due to running rather rough upon receipt. The result was a fantastically functional 911, with an exceptionally healthy engine and factory oil pressure - even if the bill was a little eye watering at a little over £2,000. But money well spent, in all honesty, and ever since the car hasn’t missed a beat.
The owner tells us that the vehicle is extremely well mechanically sorted, as you would expect thanks to it being enthusiast owned, any maintenance required is always sorted well before it would ever become an issue. The engine fires up at the turn of a key and sounds as healthy as ever, assisted by the stainless steel exhaust system, and the 5-speed manual transmission remains to be smooth and precise between shifts and the car produces no unwelcome knocks or bangs while driving or under load.
The vehicle was also waxoyled when it was new, helping prevent any rust over the years, and it has paid off. The underside of this Porsche looks absolutely fantastic for its age.
If you’re looking for some thrills while looking good in the process, you don’t need to look any further than this.

Summary

Exceptionally rare, one of 226 UK supplied right hand drive Super Sports, you’ll be hard pushed to see another one in the flesh - we’re unsure just how many of those original 226 still remain in circulation today.
80’s 911’s have proven their worth over the years in terms of being a fantastic investment, prices have been creeping up and staying absolutely rock solid - and rightly so, they are among the prettiest of the line up with a cult like following, retaining tremendous levels of respect throughout the car communities.
If you’re in the market for a 911, or any Porsche for that matter, this should be a serious contender.
