The Appeal
Every petrolhead should drive an air-cooled 911 at some point and one of the most entertaining ways to go about this is with a cabriolet. ‘80s Carreras are particularly rewarding from behind the wheel, retaining the analogue feel of the earliest 911s while having plenty of performance from their 3.2-litre naturally aspirated flat-six engines to engage even the most experienced of drivers.
We’re delighted to offer this very original and nicely presented 1986 example. It’s accompanied by a substantial history file which contains a number of invoices for specialists servicing in recent years. We’re informed that this drives very well indeed and runs without fault. It’s in fantastic condition for its age, without being overly pristine to enjoy as Porsche intended. If you’re looking for a usable classic 911, this cabriolet is eminently worthy of your consideration.
The History and Paperwork
- V5C present
- Numerous servicing invoices from marque specialists including Autostrasse and Classic Car Workshop
- Original book pack present
- MOT valid until May 2024
- Five previous keepers recorded by the DVLA
- 88,058 miles indicated on the odometer
The Interior
- Tan leather upholstery
- Blaupunkt stereo
- Five-dial instrument layout
- Very little in the way of wear to the upholstery, switchgear or controls
In typically Teutonic fashion, this Porsche’s interior is functional, yet beautifully made. The tan upholstery sits well against the blue dashboard, door cappings and of course, the exterior paintwork.
The seats are in marvellous condition, with just a little light wear as you’d expect to see with a car of this vintage. The carpeting too looks in fine order, as are the door cards and the inside of the front luggage compartment. The dashboard is in fine order and all the switchgear within appears very smart. There are a few nicks to the leather around the ignition barrel, but otherwise the dash covering is nicely preserved. The five-dial instrument arrangement, beloved of enthusiasts, is nothing short of iconic and we understand these gauges to be in good working order.
The Exterior
- Blue metallic paintwork
- Electric folding soft top roof in good order with good rear window
- Matching tonneau cover in fine order
- Two-tone Fuchs alloy wheels
- Very straight bodywork
This 911 Cabriolet looks wonderful in blue and it's in very usable condition. The vendor suggests that certain panels have likely been repainted during the car’s life, although the colour match looks really good across all the bodywork. The paint is in great overall condition, with just a few small imperfections around the lower portions and some slight bubbling to the offside behind the door. A light layer of stone chip protection is applied to the valance panels front and rear and this too is in nice shape. The bodywork is all very sound, with panels that align nicely and no obvious signs of corrosion.
The soft top roof is in very good condition for its age, as is the tonneau cover. The vendor demonstrates that the electric folding mechanism works correctly - quite the innovation for a cabriolet of this vintage! Fuchs alloys are some of our favourite wheels and these two-tone items are particularly attractive. They’re all in brilliant condition, as are the Pirelli Cinturato tyres they’re shod with. The underside looks immensely smart, with no apparent issues.
The Mechanics
- 3.2-litre naturally aspirated, air-cooled flat-six engine
- Five-speed manual gearbox
- The vendor reports that the engine is running perfectly
- Reportedly excellent to drive
- Engine has a minor oil leak, believed to be from an oil pipe and according to Porsche specialist that services the car
- Well presented inside the engine compartment
This Carrera provides one of the purest classic 911 experiences, with a naturally aspirated flat-six powering the rear wheels only.
Benefiting from judicious maintenance, we’re informed that the engine runs perfectly and provides ample power throughout the rev range and in each gear. The five-speed gearbox selects rations smoothly and the brakes are said to be very effective.
Summary
Driving well and in fantastic, usable condition, this 911 Carrera Cabriolet would be the perfect option for those seeking fun summer transport. We particularly enjoy its originality and are measured by the well documented service history within the substantial history file.
