The Appeal
The R107 Mercedes 300SL is a timeless luxury sports car that appeals to enthusiasts for its sleek styling, responsive performance, and comfortable interior. Its reputation as a bulletproof classic is well deserved but finding one in as good condition as this example is not the work of a moment.
Originally purchased in Germany and driven back to the UK, this prime specimen has seen limited use and careful storage and maintenance over the years, resulting in a very original car that is surely amongst the best you will see. If you’re looking for an R107 in great original condition, this could be the one for you.
History and Paperwork
- Purchased new in Germany in 1986
- Reportedly in the same family to 2018
- Purchased by a collector
- Acquired by the current owner with only an additional 100 miles on the odometer
- Original set of owner’s manuals
- Some Mercedes main dealer history recorded in the service book
- In addition, we’re told that the oil has been changed annually
- MOT valid to October 2023
- V5C present in owner’s name
The Interior
- Fabulous condition
- Blaupunkt stereo looks to be original
- Cruise control
- Electric windows
- Everything reported to be in full working order
While the SL is quite capable of being an everyday car, this example looks to have been saved for high days and holidays. The interior, resplendent in its period brown colour scheme, shows very little sign of usage and, as such, looks to be something of a time warp.
The owner reports that the car has been kept in a garage for most of its life and, given the lack of UV damage that is apparent, we can well believe it. Some of the credit must also go to Mercedes for the level of build quality that they achieved with the R107, to which the condition of the interior furnishings bears testament.
In the boot, there is a spare tyre and the full original factory toolkit, both of which appear to be completely unused. Overall, you will struggle to find better.
The Exterior
- Light Ivory paintwork
- Brown soft top
- Factory hard top with garage stand
- Excellent condition
Presented in a shade of cream known as ‘Light Ivory’, this car is a real stunner in any of its configurations: top down, soft top up or hard top installed.
Aside from one small mark on the back panel (pictured), the paintwork is in excellent condition and is complemented by beautiful chrome work.
The wheel trims are unmarked and there is a matching set of Michelin tyres which all look to have good tread.
Underneath, the vendor tells us that the car was treated to a rust protection process and it certainly seems to have paid dividends as the underside is remarkably clean.
Overall, it’s a real credit to its current and former keepers.
The Mechanics
- 3 litre straight six
- Automatic gearbox
- Starts and runs beautifully
You’ll be pleased to hear that the originality and great condition continues here. Reportedly completely unmodified, the car starts without hesitation and runs very smoothly.
The MOT history shows only minor advisories and, if the level of care that this car has clearly received is maintained, then we expect that trend to continue.
Summary
Called out by our photographer as one of the best examples that he’s seen, this SL is surely a must for any discerning Mercedes collector. With a fine period colour scheme and in lovely original condition throughout, it will surely make its next owner very proud.
