1986 Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC

Highlights

  • Low mileage example with just 7 former keepers
  • Preserved beautifully and presented in excellent condition today
  • Performs admirably, even down to fully functional seatbelt extenders
  • Comes ready with advisory-free MOT until 17 April 2024

The Appeal

Sitting near the very top of Mercedes’ well-received second generation of S-class vehicles, the 500 SEC is a rather rare coupe worthy of consideration by any collector or enthusiast. In true Mercedes-Benz fashion, you’re treated to an array of impressive technology, luxurious comforts inside and out, and of course, the 5L V8.
In addition to proudly showcasing its impressive specification, this particular example also boasts a rather low mileage figure, with an equally respectable owner count to suit. It’s also seemingly been very well cared for over the years, and now stands in excellent condition with a vast selection of welcome maintenance history under its belt.
With fully functional and well-preserved examples of the 500 SEC seemingly becoming rather difficult to obtain, this certainly presents an ideal opportunity for those looking to secure arguably one of the finer examples available.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in May 1986
  • Garage stored, and well maintained by the current keeper
  • Just 7 former keepers, with a mere 79,356 miles covered
  • Advisory-free MOT until 17 April 2024
  • Includes a great selection of history and documentation, including;
    • Numerous previous MOT certificates
    • A collection of invoices detailing previous maintenance, which includes main dealer, and independent specialist work
    • A complete booklet pack, including a service booklet with stamps up to 75,651 miles
    • The current V5C document

The Interior

  • Finished with classy beige leather, and Walnut touches throughout
  • Highly specced example, featuring the likes of;
    • Heated and electrically adjustable front seats, with memory options
    • Fully functional seat belt extenders
    • Electrical sliding sunroof
  • Presented in fantastic condition, with only light signs of wear and minor blemishes to note. As expected, these include slight wear to the driver’s seat bolster, minor marking to wooden trim pieces, and evidence of a previous repair near the instrument cluster

The Exterior

  • Metallic Nautical Blue paintwork, presented in great condition for the age of the vehicle, with seemingly only minor blemishes to note. The vendor informs us that the pictured miscoloured areas will be blended in and less noticeable prior to collection
  • Fitted with 14” alloy wheels, all five of which retain an excellent finish, with only light blemishes. The wheels come wrapped in a set of Nankang tyres, with plenty of tread left to enjoy
  • With the exception of a few very minor dents, brightwork and trim components retain plenty of shine, and accompany the paintwork rather well
  • Overall, the vehicle is presented in an excellent manner for its age. With the aforementioned minor blemishes aside, this 500 SEC stands as a rather well-preserved example

The Mechanics

  • Powered by a buttery smooth 5L V8
  • Automatic transmission
  • Runs & drives beautifully, with no known issues to report
  • Well maintained example, with plenty of history to show
  • Maintained regularly by a combination of the current keeper, independent specialists, and Mercedes main dealers
  • Although the vehicle has seemingly required very little in recent years, the service history denotes the following key maintenance;
    • A gearbox and torque converter reconditioning in September 2000
    • New spark plugs at 72,166 miles in October 2012
    • New fuel pump and relay in December 2021
    • New battery in April 2023
  • Ready to be enjoyed, with an advisory-free MOT until 17 April 2024

Summary

The 500 SEC is easily one of the most desirable contenders from Mercedes-Benz’s S-class lineup and deserves to be considered by any collector. This particular example performs brilliantly, presents itself very well inside and out, and has plenty of history to suit. If you’re in the market for a C126 to add to your collection, this 500 SEC should certainly be at the top of your list.
