The Appeal
Stylish, comfortable, practical and reliable, Mercedes-Benz’ R107 has stood the test of time and is a genuine modern classic. The R107 shape remained largely the same from its introduction in 1971 until the end of production in 1989, testament to its popularity with buyers, and the 300 SL iteration (as here) has long been regarded as the model to have.
Today, post-1985 (third-generation) R107s are particularly sought-after, featuring the late-run upgrades: improved suspension and added body strengthening, plus the chin spoiler. This example is in extremely good condition both inside and out, has an immaculate hard-top and a recently fitted hood, plus a reassuring folder of paperwork.
The History and Paperwork
- Original owner’s manual, service book, radio manual
- Full service history, Mercedes dealers and specialists
- MoT valid until March 2024
- Full VDI check
- Lots of historic invoices
- Past MoTs
- Two sets of keys
The car comes with a thick folder of paperwork, including lots of historic invoices and past MoTs.
The original leather folder contains all the manuals, including that for the radio, and the service record book details servicing carried out at Mercedes main dealers and specialists throughout the car’s life.
Recent invoices include one from March 2023 for more than £1,700, one from August 2022 for over £6,200, one from September 2022 for almost £2,000 and one from November 2021 for over £1,400. That's more than £11,000 recently spent to keep the vehicle in tip top condition.
The Interior
- Very Clean and all original interior
- Fabric seats in very good order
- Driver’s seat recently reupholstered
- Good carpets and overmats
- Walnut centre console in good condition
- Dashboard trim looks great
- Original Blaupunkt stereo
- Optional Wind Deflector
- ‘+2’ rear seats
- Original tool roll, first-aid kit, jack.
The car’s interior is in remarkably good condition: all four fabric seats are excellent, with the driver’s seat base having been recently reupholstered. The rear seats fold down to create a more usable luggage space.
The carpets are in very good condition, having been protected by overmats, which are also clean with no visible wear.
The walnut centre-console and dashboard are generally very good, with only a minor crack in one corner, and condition of the leather trim on the dashboard would suggest that the car has probably been garaged for most of its life, as there’s no fading or cracks. The dials and switchgear are all clean and unmarked, and everything appears to work as it should (including the air-conditioning).
The door cards – trimmed in leather and fabric that matches the seats – are both superb.
In the boot is a smart carpet liner, with no stains or marks, plus an original tool roll and tools, an original first-aid kit and an original jack.
The Exterior
- Fabulous Arctic White paintwork
- Recently fitted new blue hood
- Superb wheels and tyres
- Hard-top in fantastic condition
- Great badges and brightwork
- Headlamps and tail-lights unmarked
The car’s paintwork looks great, with no visible dents or scratches bar a few minor scuffs on the chin spoiler. The badges and brightwork are equally good. All four wheels present in excellent condition, while the tyres all have lots of life left in them.
The vendor has recently had a new hood fitted, so the car can be regarded as watertight, and the rear window is clean and clear.
The hard-top looks as good as new, suggesting it has had very little use.
The Mechanics
- 2962cc engine
- 4-speed auto ‘box
- Air-conditioning
- Smart engine bay
- Clean and tidy underneath
- ABS anti-lock brakes
- Starts and runs beautifully
The car starts on first turn of the key, gearchanges are smooth and quiet, and the engine sounds lovely. The vendor us assures that it drives as well as it looks and, with the R107’s reputation for mechanical reliability, should offer many more years of trouble-free motoring.
Open the bonnet and everything is clean and tidy, further testament to successive owners’ fastidious programme of servicing and maintenance.
Beneath the car, the exhaust looks to be recent and there’s no sign of corrosion or of leaks.
Summary
The R107 is popular for good reason; it combines glamorous looks with robust engineering and is renowned for its reliability. The thick folder of paperwork here shows that the car has been well looked-after by successive owners, and it really is impressive for its age and mileage. With a recent new hood and superb hard-top, the car offers the promise of year-round motoring adventures, but the appeal of the R107 is all about top-down driving and this one is ready to be snapped up just as better weather is on the horizon.
