The Appeal

After a rocky introduction in 1975, the XJS has really hit its stride recently in terms of classic Jaguar status and kudos. Having recovered from the thankless task of following the E-Type and early quality gripes, the XJS family is surely set for a rosy and collectable future.
The best examples, of course, as the rarest ones. With only a shade over 5,000 of the XJ-SC model made, the numbers remaining in this 3.6L, manual configuration will run to dozens rather than hundreds.

The History and Paperwork

 • Bought new by the current owner in January 1986 from Paramount Jaguar Derby
 • Cherished used and enjoyed by him ever since
 • Includes a solid archive of paperwork, a sample of which is photographed here
 • This includes the current V5
 • The current MoT valid until 11/22
 • Numerous previous hard copy MoTs
 • Many invoices attesting to the impeccable maintenance undertaken
 • Private reg plate C36 EAT included in the sale

The Interior

 • The interior of this XJ-SC is a sumptuous and comfortable place and its all in excellent condition
 • The grey leather, box pleated seats present in excellent condition with no areas of deterioration noted
 • The centre console and door cards are dressed in the same supple grey leather and adorned with accents of maple veneer
 • The token rear seats of the coupe were deleted in the XJ-SC in favour of a useful, carpeted luggage shelf with built in opening lockers and chrome luggage rail
 • Carpets are in a grey wool, and all appear to be in equally fine fettle
 • The owner has fitted the car with a very stylish Momo steering wheel but the originally fitted TWR leather wheel (pictured) is included
 • The large boot contains the full-sized spare wheel and is carpeted in black
 • Fitted with LED lights
Much like the XJS itself, to our eyes the interior of this XJ-SC has really aged very well indeed. It offers the new luck owner just the right combination of retro appeal and practical usability. With the rear luggage shelf, rear map pockets and lidded lockers, there is some really useful space in here too. That’s before we even get to the enormous boot!

The Exterior

 • The exterior of the XJ-SC is finished in a very attractive white colourway
 • This looks great in concert with the black “B” pillars and black fabric roof panels
 • The bright, metallic silver 16-inch TWR alloy wheels suit the car perfectly
 • Bodywork is very well presented, and panel gaps are tight and true
 • Light lenses, front and rear, appear to be in faultless condition and the glass work is free from any obvious imperfections
 • The XJ-SC offers a number of roof configuration options
 • These include one or both rigid roof panels removed, and rear folding hood section up or down
 • The plastic rear window is in excellent, uncracked condition
 • A black fabric tonneau is included which covers the rear hood section when it is down
White has always suited the XJS very well and it looks even better against the contrast of the black roof panels and rear hood. This is a great looking car and the distinctive TWR alloys really finish off a very eye-catching combination perfectly.

The Mechanics

 • The XJ-SC was the first Jaguar to benefit from the fitment of the 3.6L, straight-six AJ6 engine
 • Not that much less powerful than the V12 and usefully lighter, many consider this the pick of the XJS engines
 • Power is fed to the rear wheels via a five speed Getrag manual gearbox – a classic combination
 • The owner has had the XJ-SC regularly serviced and any other maintenance requirements have been addressed regardless of cost
 • Unsurprisingly then this XJ-SC starts, idles and runs perfectly
 • The powerful straight six, manual gearbox and lighter weight make for a great performance to economy ratio
The erstwhile AJ6, straight-six engine is beloved by XJS purists. This model was the first Jaguar to receive the engine as it was considered lower risk in such a low-volume model. The engine proved to be a gem. Smooth, powerful and characterful, it led many to question why the heavier, thirstier and more expensive to maintain V12 continued to be offered in the XJS.

Summary

If you are unfamiliar with the XJ-SC iteration of the XJS then you may be missing out. It has much to recommend it. It has a spacious and practical 2-seater cabin, doing away with the token rear seats of the coupe. It has significantly more rigidity and bodily integrity than the fully convertible XJS. In this configuration the AJ6 engine mated to the five-speed manual make for a compelling prospect.
This example is a real find too. Still in its original ownership some 36 years on and in beautifully presented and maintained condition throughout. Don’t miss your opportunity to be only the second owner of this delightful XJ-SC.
