1986 Bentley Mulsanne

Highlights

• Very nice leather and deep carpets
 • Unusual and attractive colour combination of Mushroom and Dark Oyster

The Background

Built from 1980 until 1992, the Mulsanne’s name honoured Bentley’s 5 Le Mans victories between 1924 and 1930, where the highest speeds were reached on the famous Mulsanne straight.

It shared it’s 6.75 litre V8 with Rolls Royce siblings.

Hand built in Crewe, it was perhaps the ultimate luxury car in the world, combining the opulence of a Rolls Royce with a more performance tuned chassis.

The History

The car was sold new by H.R. Owen in Middlesex, registered on New Years Day 1996 and delivered to its first owner on January 6th.

In the intervening years it passed through the hands of several owners, and the file of receipts show it has had the attention of various marque specialists for work and parts supply, always a good sign with a car of this nature.

The Paperwork

There is a large folder of papers with the car, it shows the car has been taken care of by keen owners over the years.

Receipts from Flying spares and Balmoral parts specialists reveal it has been getting the right parts as well.

The Interior

Mushroom may be an odd name for an interior colour, but it looks delightful and is a perfect compliment to the Dark Oyster paint.

The leather, a creamy beige with pale blue piping, is in fine condition, very little patina or wear to the surface, just a little to the driver's seat edges, and the leather headlining is excellent.
The pale blue carpet with leather edging is in generally excellent condition, there are a couple of marks but the drivers area is the only part with any discolouration around the heel pad area.
There is beautiful inlaid wood across the door caps, dashboard and centre area. The timber itself is in great shape, however the lacquer has cracked and peeled on all the doors and other parts.

It would be an easy restoration as the wood beneath is smooth not cracked.

The Exterior

Dark Oyster is a colour that has swung back into vogue and looks stunning on the car. The paint quality is excellent from the factory and has a lovely smooth gloss to the finish.

There are a few marks, a scratch over the offside headlamp, a couple of small blisters on the front wings under the chrome badges and some stone chips and the rear wheel arch is a little flat.

The nearside rear wheel arch has been professionally painted this week following the photoshoot so now looks superb.
It has chrome finish alloys, which are not curbed and the faces are very good, they are dulled inside the detail holes but this is not easy to see, and the car has Avon Turbosteel tyres all round, these a couple of years old but have deep tread.

The Mechanics

The car starts on the button and runs very smoothly and quietly, engaging drive and reverse cleanly.

In the engine bay, the V8 is clean and dry with no sign of fluid leaks, and looking under the car the floor pan appears clean and solid.
Recent receipts show the car has recently had a new starter motor fitted, the front brake hard lines were replaced and steering rack gaiters changed in 2018.

It should be noted that the odometer is faulty and is not reflecting the current mileage which the vendor reports to only have stopped working recently. They do however report that it drivers well and has no other issues after a recent road trip.

The Appeal

Big and luxurious, there's nothing quite like these handcrafted machines and this car stands out with its subtle and surprisingly modern colour scheme.

While this may not be a perfect example it does offer easy entry into the Bentley club with a solid and well running car ready to be enjoyed and just some minor fettling would make an excellent Mulsanne.
