The Appeal

Predating Carol Shelby's AC Cobra and Sunbeam Tiger, London-based Allard Motor Company LTD was perhaps the first to start putting American V8 engines into lightweight British sports cars. The J2 was a sub-1,000 kg roadster that Allard intended to crack the US market with. Ultimately, importing American-made engines only to send them back again once fitted in the cars proved problematic, but the model did find success at Le Mans where none other than Carol Shelby drove them. Perhaps that's where he got his idea from...

This 1986 Laser J2X is a well-regarded fibreglass replica of the legendary Allard J2. As the photographs show, it's a very smart example that would look superb in any collection. Like the Allard on which it is based, it has a V8 engine, in this case, a 5.7-litre unit mated to an automatic gearbox.
