1985 Volkswagen LT31 Camper LWB

Highlights

  • Local garage has looked after and known the vehicle for the last 25 years
  • Usable camper and classic, turning 40 years old next year
  • Loads of original features; difficult to find an original factory camper
  • MOT valid until May 2025

The Appeal

As the largest of the VW vans, it's natural that the LT would make a superb camper. The wide, long wheelbase offered a host of creature comforts, with one of the most popular conversions being carried out by Diamond RV of Leighton Buzzard. These creative and full-featured conversions were amongst the most lauded, and are still highly sought after today - especially if they maintain their quintessentially 80s interiors.
This fabulous camper does exactly that, with only a little work required to bring it up to snuff. The interior is spacious and in fine order, and after a bit of restoration, the exterior will be quite the same. This fabulous van has been through only three previous keepers, and is still a particularly fine piece of retro practicality.
With an MOT valid until May 2025, this camper is ready for immediate use.

History and Paperwork

  • Registered in 1985
  • In first ownership until 1991
  • In next ownership until 2012
  • Sold to the current keeper in 2021
  • The vendor has hoped to restore it but sadly this has stalled due to illness
  • Local garage has looked after and known the vehicle for the last 25 years
  • MOT valid until May 2025

The Condition

  • Paint is good but a little flat, and could use a buff to lift
  • Some surface corrosion on the front behind the bumper and a couple of spots on the body
  • The vendor reports there's no perforation or rot, however
  • Sills and wheel arches all appear solid
  • Underside is relatively clean with no visible perforation
  • Needs a new skylight and plastic vent for the toilet
  • Good condition inside
  • Internally, everything is in fine, highly-original 80s order - from the cooker to the fridge
  • Some light wear, commensurate with 40 years of use, but all looks eminently usable
  • Upholstery free of rips, tears or cigarette burns
  • All cupboards open and lock correctly
  • Could use new decals to finish the exterior

The Mechanics

  • 2.4L I6 petrol powerplant
  • Manual transmission with 4 gears
  • All standard and mechanically sound
  • Engine needs tuning but reportedly runs well
  • Hand-made stainless steel exhaust
  • The MOT highlights an advisory on slight corrosion on brake pipes, front and back
  • The vendor observes that the van drives well and travels along at 60/70 miles per hour quite happily
