The Plus

Volkswagen has pulled out all the stops to celebrate 50 years of the legendary Beetle Type 1. Produced in Mexico exclusively for the German market, the Jubilee Beetle, or 50 Jahre Käfer, features Zinkgrau (Pewter) metallic paintwork, green tinted windows, chrome bumpers and mouldings, and 4.5Jx15 'GT' wheels.

Inside, Volkswagen has fitted this special edition with a Blaupunkt Brunswick radio, an upholstered dashboard, grey cloth seats with red stripes, a four-spoke sports steering wheel (taken from the Golf), a grey roof lining and carpet, and a heated rear window.

Only 3,150 examples were produced, and these models are now highly sought-after by collectors.

This 1985 example was imported into the UK on its release and has only had two registered owners, both from the same family. With its well-documented history and up-to-date maintenance, this Beetle is sure to attract attention, especially as it is entirely original, unmodified and unrestored.

The seller states:

"The Beetle has been used sparingly but regularly, and its mechanicals still perform as well as if it had just left the factory. It has been carefully maintained.

"We think the last Beetle deserves special equipment," wrote Volkswagen in a 1985 advertisement. VW produced 3,150 examples of the "50th Anniversary Beetle", 2,400 of which were reserved for the German market. It was a real break in the motoring lives of the Germans, who had learned to travel with and in the Beetle and, rumour had it, to love it too. After 50 years, Volkswagen has officially ceased production.
