The Appeal
The Cobra wasn’t just a car with a great name and a place in record books for its acceleration. Those looks and that reputation spawned a thousand copies, thereby giving enthusiasts a way into ownership otherwise locked out by the price of originals.
One of the rarer replicas is this, the Sheldonhurst, built for a few short years by the tiny Tyseley, Birmingham outfit better known for its Porsche 356 cars. Dimensionally very close to the original and built to a good standard, Sheldonhurst kits are well-regarded. With few built, though, they rarely come to market.
This one had a long gestation from its 1976 Ford Granada 3L donor roots to the car you see today. The project began in 1985 and was completed by a professional restorer in 2005. It has remained in the same family throughout. The history file documents the build and includes a raft of photographs.
Finished in very stylish dark blue metallic with silver racing stripe and black leather cabin, this is a well kept car in good condition thanks to the limited use. Under the bonnet is the Granny’s 3L ‘Cologne’ V6, mated to a relaxing auto box. This is a Cobra that can get up and go but is perhaps more about burbling about and being seen in.
It has been carefully garaged since completion but little used within the last four years. So there are a couple of jobs to attend to - such as a core plug and new battery - but the car starts and can be driven.
For the kit car or Cobra enthusiast looking for something a little different, this much-loved car looks tempting.
