The Appeal
There are faster and nimbler 80s coupes, like the Capri or Scirroco. But those are not qualities that single the Fuego out for greatness. Put simply: are there any 80s coupes as charismatic and downright rare as this Fuego Turbo?
We think not. This stunning ‘85 car has got us all quite hot under the collar here at Car & Classic Towers. If the slippery style, lattice alloys, details like the big, shouty ‘TURBO’ decals, the brick mobile phone, the boost gauge and the concealed door handles get you excited, we hear you.
The Fuego was developed to take on rivals from Ford, Volkswagen and Vauxhall/Opel, created in a world that didn’t see the hot hatch coming. Renault was a pioneer of forced induction technology and bolting a turbo to its tiny ‘Cleon-Alu’ engine - as seen in the 12 Gordini, various Alpines and even the Lotus Europa - delivered a healthy 132bhp of urge. Sales were never great and finding a modern-day survivor not unlike searching for small pointy things in big piles of dead grass.
Yet here is one. It must be amongst the best available. Inside and out it is both pleasingly factory standard and in remarkable condition, looking much as if it had just rolled off the production line. It has covered just 56,253 miles from new and comes with a huge history file best measured by weight.
So, there you have it. Perhaps one of the most interesting and unusual coupes of the 80s. Miss this one and you’ll likely wait a very long time to find another one quite this good.
