The Appeal

The vast majority of classic convertibles aren’t exactly what you’d call practical. Designed for the occasional B Road blast, these usually aren’t the sort of cars you can comfortably use over long distances and rely on them not to break down. That’s where the SL comes in.
Mercedes-Benz seems to have this unrivalled ability to take any established concept and instantly do it better than anyone else. Starting with a convertible version of the “Gullwing” accompanied by a four-cylinder 190 SL, before progressing to the supremely stylish W113 “Pagoda”, Mercedes were on a roll by the early ‘70s when the R107 was launched.
Produced from 1971 to 1989, the R107 remains the most perenially popular of the classic SLs and we’re delighted to offer his 1985 280. Resplendent in red with matching hubcaps and the now rare factory hard top, this SL is a very handsome example. It’s commendably original throughout and appears very well preserved. The MOT runs until April 2025, so this is just the car to buy now in readiness for the summer.
