The Background
The factory XJS-C was announced in 1984 in AJ6 3.6 guise and in 1985 with the 5.3 V12. It ceased production in 1988 with the introduction of the full convertible. Standard XJS coupe’s were taken off the production line and sent to Tickford to be converted to Cabriolets/Targa's.
Most cars were converted by Tickford with rear seat delete, because of US federal restrictions. Many supplied in the UK were converted back to 2+2 configuration, but this rendered them non standard and the modification had to be advised to insurance companies.
The History
The particular car in front of you is a 1985 Targa conversion, thought to have been carried out by Aston Martin Tickford though unfortunately there is no paperwork present to substantiate this claim.
It’s been well looked after and is in fine condition but unfortunately the owner has too many vehicles and needs the garage space so he has decided to part with it.
There are no known faults and there were no advisories on the last MoT.
The Paperwork
The vehicle comes with Service History. All MoTs from 1991 – 2003 are present. There are also copies of the V5s from all the previous owners from the DVLA. Unfortunately, full service history is not present but the MoTs and the V5s confirm that the mileage appears to be genuine, as does the cars condition.
The Interior
The luxury leather interior is in lovely aged condition with no damage or restoration having taken place. Its very original. The leather could do with feeding but as mentioned there is no damage.
The walnut dash has got some wear on the varnish and glazing with some small cracks, this unfortunately is typical of cars with this type of veneer finish. This can be seen in the photos.
The tan leather really is a great combo with the red paintwork and with it being in such good condition it still feels like the height of 80s luxury inside the car and everything works as expected.
The Exterior
The paintwork is in great condition considering its 35 years old and still has a decent lustre/shine. The roof is in excellent condition and there is no sign of repairs on either the body or roof.
The deep inset mesh wheels are also in good condition.
The Mechanics
Engine is the original unit from factory and is very clean and tidy. The history shows no major work has been needed and its condition is commensurate with its low miles at only 68k in 35 years.
The car runs and drives as it should and the 3.6 Litre Straight six purrs as it should.
The Appeal
The Jaguar XJS was a great luxury cruiser and its styling and profile of long bonnet housing a meaty engine with power sent to the rear is a classic formula that most petrol heads would recognise instantly. A formula also that saw this big cat become very popular between 80s playboys with a bit of money and even motorsport junkies with the big Jag taking part in several motorsport series.
This particular example is a very honest clean original example that has done very little miles in its 35 years existence, a fact to which its condition correlates. These older Jaaags (as Jeremy Clarkson would say) have a real character about them and are well sought after by those in the know so prices are still healthy some 45 years on.
If you fancy a slice of 80s luxury with a prowling 3.6Litre straight six under your right foot, this could be the car for you!
