The Background
With the first Ford Capri models rolling off the production line in 1969, and the final ones in 1986, they were intended to be the European equivalent to the US Mustang.
The Mark 3 model represented here, was produced from ’82 to ’86 with the 2.8i topping the list for both performance & overall specification.
The 2.8 injection Special was almost the last of the marque, available from ’84 onwards and had the added refinements of half leather seats, a limited slip differential and the aforementioned 7 spoke alloy wheels all as standard.
The History
First registered on the 2nd of August 1985 by Elmsleigh the Ford dealers in Enfield North London, this 2.8i appears to have stayed locally for most of its life until whisked off to Yorkshire by its current owner in 2015.
Judging by past mot’s it’s not really been used much for over 10 years, having only covered approximately 4,000 miles in total. The vendor, having purchased it in January 2015, has had very little time to use it and has only covered approximately 1,000 miles during the last 6 years, hence why he feels it’s now time to let his beloved Capri go to another home.
The Paperwork
There is a current V5c in the owner’s name along with an Mot certificate valid to May 2022.
Also with the car are owner’s manuals, warranty registration, old MOT certificates, invoices for parts bought by the vendor, and some receipts for work carried out previously.
The Interior
The interior is well presented with a new roof lining and re-covered, half leather Recaro front seats, along with the rears and finished in grey. Carpets are clean and tidy without any holes or rips, and there are a set of new footwell mats to go with the car.
The dash is complete and includes a period radio cassette player, but who needs additional accompaniment when you can drive to the soundtrack of that injected V6 engine up front.
The Exterior
The iconic Mineral Blue colour scheme on the Capri really has to be the one to have, and sets the car off nicely.
Generally good overall, there is a little micro blistering on the bonnet bulge and to the valance below the front screen where the wipers are mounted. There is also a little crazing to the paint work here too. Not noticeable unless you really look closely, however.
The sills would appear to be sound with just a little surface rust, where we believe a jack has been mounted.
Wheels are good with only a little scuffing and tyres are almost new all round.
Overall, the exterior presents well, but would benefit from a little touching up here and there to really finish the car off.
The Mechanics
So, the engine. Well, there’s an invoice for engine blueprinting from Ric Wood, the renowned Ford Capri racer and tuner, from 2010; so we can assume that this Capri goes as well as it looks.
Certainly, she started well for the photos and moved around easily and the vendor states that she drives very well too.
The gearbox appeared to change up and down easily without any fuss.
These Capri’s are really quite straight forward, front engine with a 5-speed gearbox driving the rear wheels through a rear beam axle. They’re easy to work on so there’s little that can’t be fixed easily and relatively cheaply should there be any ongoing issues not that there appear to be any with this one.
The Appeal
Well, it has to be 80’s chic that’s the big draw here. Cool styling, big powerful engine & rear wheel drive all add up to one classy car, and who can forget Bodie & Doyle driving Capris (albeit 3.0s ones) in The Professionals. We all wanted one in the ‘80’s, but most of us couldn’t afford to buy one, so now is your chance to acquire an appreciating classic Capri before they again reach the realms of un-affordability.
