Highlights
- Sought-after Mondial QV with more power
- One of only 629 QV convertibles
- Extremely rare ‘white on white’ model with original paintwork
- Very low mileage
The Appeal
Practicality and Ferrari may seem unusual bedfellows, but the firm had a long tradition of building 2+2 four seaters before the Mondial arrived in 1980. The Quattrovalve from 1982 added more power while the convertible arrived in 1983 and was available for just two years.
This 1985 convertible is one of the last built and particularly rare thanks to its white on white colour scheme, of which only a few dozen left the factory. It started its life in Switzerland before being imported to Belgium in 1988. It has subsequently spent most of its life as part of a private classic car collection, which has helped keep the mileage to minuscule proportions.
In great condition with evidence of careful maintenance, this example looks very tempting.
The History and Paperwork
- First registered in 1985 in Switzerland
- Imported to Belgium in 1988
- Acquired by the previous owner in 1997 to add to his private collection
- We are told the car has been maintained with great care
- Supplied with all original handbooks
- Factory fitted with optional electric windows and air conditioning
- Vendor advises that only a handful of car were supplied in this colour specification
The Mondial’s crisp Pininfarina lines broke with Ferrari tradition even if its 308GT4-derived chassis and Dino V8 were firmly familiar. In 1982 Maranello responded to customer requests for more power, not through turbocharging as was de rigeur at the time but by adding more valves. With four valves per cylinder the new version got the only name such a car built in Italy could sure have - Quattrovalve, or QV for short.
A year later American customers got what they had been asking for, a Mondial convertible. Available for just two years the convertible is the rarest of all Mondial variants with just 629 built.

The Mondial convertible was designed in response to customer demand from America and this late model example leans into that theme with its white on white colour scheme. We are told that only a handful of cars left the factory with this specification.
Any car so specified will need particular care because any marks will show up, particularly to the interior. The conditon of this car reflects the very low mileage but also evidences the care of its few owners as there are few indications that this is a near 40 year old car around the exterior or interior fittings.
The Mechanics
- Fuel injected 2.9litre ‘Dino’ Ferrari V8 engine
- Four valves per cylinder delivering 235bhp
- 5spd manual gearbox with dogleg first
- Double wishbone suspension
- Mid/rear engine layout
- The car has been standing still for many years, so there is maintenance to expect. TLC has to be done before driving this car.
In the early 1980s manufacturers were chasing the turbocharged dream as a quick fix for adding more power. It addresses criticism of the Mondial 8’s relatively low power, Ferrari chose not to follow the herd. Its solution was the ‘Quattrovalve’ head that added four valves per cylinder to the longstanding Dino V8. This upped power to 235bhp and gave the Mondial a new name.
European market cars like this one received the red crackle finish for the intake casting together with a machined aluminium ribbing and ‘Ferrari Quattrovalve’ script.
This car has covered an exceptionally low mileage, which we are told is supported by a maintenance record that exhibits the care of its owners.
