1985 BMW 528i SE (E28)

Highlights

  • Recently recommissioned
  • MOT to May 2023
  • Just 43,872 miles indicated
  • Original and unmodified

The Appeal

When it came to executive saloons in the 80s, if you enjoyed driving as opposed to being driven, there really was only one sensible choice – the BMW 5-series.

With fine driving dynamics, excellent drivetrains and that legendary Teutonic build quality, they offered a blend of luxury and sporting prowess unlike any other car.
This example comes with an interesting back story. Having been recently recommissioned after 20 years in storage, it presents in highly original condition, with low mileage and a long MOT.

If you’re after a fine, unmodified example of a retro saloon, this simply has to be considered.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in August 1985
  • Apparently first supplied by Coopers BMW of London to Sir Kenneth Butt (the second Baronet of Westminster)
  • 5 owners from new
  • The vehicle has spent 20 years in storage, but was started regularly
  • Recommissioned by the current owner, which they tell us cost £4,000
  • Current MOT to May 2023
  • The car comes with a comprehensive service history and the owner’s handbooks

The Interior

  • Smart blue velour upholstery in excellent original condition, with little evidence of wear and no tears we could identify
  • Blue carpets in good condition
  • Blue vinyl door cards and dash present well, with no notable damage or cracks
  • The whole cabin has a pleasant and natural light patina
  • Electrically powered windows, door mirrors and sunroof
  • The vendor tells us all of the switchgear and controls function as they should, with no issues to report
  • The boot is lined with grey carpet in good order with no evident staining
  • Also present is the factory toolkit and a full-size spare matching alloy wheel

The Exterior

  • Original Cosmos Blue Metallic paintwork
  • The paintwork presents well, with some minor blemishes and marks, as should be expected
  • All of the bodywork appears clean and straight with no dents or notable corrosion we could see
  • The external trim all appears to be present and correct
  • Some of the brightwork and badging elements wear a light patina with a little pitting and a loss of sheen in places
  • It is wearing the original metric ‘390’ alloy wheels, which are shod in Avon tyres that look to be recent additions with good levels of tread
  • There is a small chip apparent in the front windscreen
  • Underneath, the floors and sills look nice and solid with no evident damage or significant corrosion

The Mechanics

  • 2.8-litre fuel injected straight-six, offering 184bhp when new
  • 4-speed automatic transmission
  • The engine bay is tidy and appears to be very original
  • Some drivetrain components are wearing a coat of surface corrosion
  • The vendor tells us that a new alternator, radiator and fuel tank have been installed
  • We’re informed that the car drives just as it should, with no unexpected noises or vibrations, no leaks and no smoke when running

Summary

There’s a reason that the E28 remains a popular modern classic – they’re handsomely styled, beautifully built and come with a great selection of drivetrains.
This example is presented in very good order, having been well-preserved by what was clearly careful storage for some years.

With a recent recommissioning, it’s now ready to be enjoyed.

Whether you want an interesting daily classic or something that could easily be a show winner with a little work, you can’t look past this lovely vehicle.
