A bright and charming looking example of the increasingly rare Renault 4
Fully restored around 5 years ago by marque specialists Renault Reborn
Complete with an equally bright, fun and fully retrimmed interior
The Appeal
The Renault 4 hit the boulevards in 1961 to become Renault’s later but quirky interpretation of a car for the masses in the mould of the VW Beetle, Citroen 2CV as well as Britain’s Mini. With the 4’s later appearance, Renault had the chance to learn from the weaknesses of Citroen especially. As a result, the 4 featured a bigger four-cylinder, water cooled engine for better refinement and performance. The boxy, semi-station wagon body featured a useful and early example of the hatch back for improved access and utility.
This example passed through the hands of restoration specialists Renault Reborn around 5 years ago. During this period the car underwent a full chassis, engine and body restoration and seems to remain very well preserved all round, today.
The History and Paperwork
Our example was first registered in the UK in February 1984
The 4 was thought to have left the factory in a yellow hue
The car had been used and enjoyed by 6 owners before its restoration
At this stage the 4 was thought to have covered around 74,000 miles
The seventh owner was thought to have commissioned the restoration
This was believed to have been in around 2018
By 2019 the car was in the ownership of the eighth owner
The current owner acquired the car in 2021 to become the ninth
Since then, the car has covered around 2,500 miles more
A small archive of paperwork appears to be included with the Renault
This includes the V5 in the name of the current owner
The current MOT is advisory free and valid until May 2024
Numerous previous MOTs are thought to be present
A number of handbooks and workshop manuals are present
The Interior
The interior was fully retrimmed and updated by Renault Reborn
The retrim creates a bright and decidedly funky ambiance to the cabin
The seats are trimmed in grey vinyl with colourful plaid fabric inserts
The door cards are similarly trimmed and pristine looking
The cabin floors are finished in hard wearing rubber mats
The dashboard is charmingly rudimentary
A single instrument is accompanied by warning lights and switches in the binnacle
The original single spoke Renault steering wheel is fitted
The remained of the dashboard is given up to a useful storage shelf
The iconic Renault 4 “umbrella” gear lever is noted
The retro styled radio is a contemporary DAB and Bluetooth enabled unit
The light headlining is pristine looking and arranged in an embossed diamond pattern
The spacious and well-shaped boot enjoys excellent access via the hatch
The floor is protected by a fitted rubber mat
A solid parcel shelf provides protection from prying eyes
The rear seat folds to extend luggage accommodation when required
The Exterior
This example has been previously repainted in its eye-catching livery
The 4 is finished in Indy Orange with contrasting grey accents
These accents include the steel bumpers and protective vinyl side panels
The front bumpers feature the signature quirky tubular overriders
The diminutive Renault is afforded a sporting air by its alloy wheels
These are 4.5J x 13-inch Renault six-spoke alloys
These appear to be in a fine overall condition
They are fitted with a matching set of Runway Enduro tyres in a 135/80 size
Cabin glass and light lenses all appear original and in fine order
The boxy, utilitarian design and bright colourway makes for an appealing looking car
The Mechanics
This being the GTL model our car is fitted with the 1108cc engine
This is a version of the Cleon-Fonte engine and was the biggest fitted to the 4
This is a four cylinder, two valves per cylinder petrol engine
This unit was originally rated at around 34bhp
Power is fed to the front wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox
This was sufficient to give the GTL a 75mph top speed
The 0-60mph “dash” was dispatched in around 22 seconds
This basic mechanical set up paid dividends in reliability and economy
The engine bay presentation is very good overall
There is plenty of space around the engine making for great access
The wheel brace and jack are stowed here against the side wall
The underside of the Renault 4 looks very well presented also
It us understood that a new chassis was fitted by Renault Reborn
The spare wheel is stowed at the rear of the underside of the car
The current owner reports the car as running very well
No known mechanical faults were reported
Summary
Like “mass mobilisation” cars from other geographies, the Renault 4 went on to have a long production run being produced between 1961 and 1992. During that period over eight million Renault 4’s were built and sold in over 100 countries. Despite this ubiquity, the 4 has become an increasingly rare sight in the UK today. That makes superbly restored and maintained examples even more of a pleasure to behold.
This example is not only eye-catching by dint of its scarcity but also thanks to its fine condition and bright orange livery. The sporty looking alloy wheels help lift this GTL model above the work-a-day utility car that it started life as. The interior is a delight and must prove difficult to feel glum in, given the fun and vibrance it exudes. If you are in the market for a useable, economical modern classic almost guaranteed to put a smile on your face, then bid today.
