1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa 3.2

Highlights

  • Acquired by the vendor’s mother in 1993 and parked in a garage in 1997
  • Recently extracted from its 26 year hibernation
  • The engine turns over freely although there is no spark at present

The Appeal

With the burgeoning popularity of classic 911s, it’s hard to believe that there are still original cars laying dormant in garages around the world, but that’s exactly what we have here…
This 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa was the summer transport of the vendor’s mother who acquired it back in 1993 when it was a mere nine years old. Following her double hip replacement operation in 1997, the Porsche was carefully put away in a heated garage, where it has languished under bed sheets and blankets ever since.
If you’ve always dreamed of unearthing an original survivor that’s been frozen in time for almost three decades, don’t miss the chance to acquire this amazingly well preserved 911 Targa.

The History and Paperwork

  • Acquired by the vendor’s mother in 1993
  • Carefully stashed away in 1997
  • V5C present
  • No current MOT as the car has been off the road for 26 years
  • A few old MOT test certificates accompany the car

The Interior

  • Pinstriped upholstery
  • All appears to be incredibly original with very little wear
  • Period Grundig stereo cassette player
The interior is the real star of the show with this Porsche. It looks to be incredibly well preserved and very original which is incredibly exciting
The pinstriped velour seat inserts appear in fantastic shape and there’s barely even any wear to the vinyl seat bolsters. The door cards too, have survived really well with little to give away their age.
Throughout the cabin and luggage compartment, the carpeting exhibits no damage we could discern and not a lot of wear either. The dashboard appears free from damage and the black vinyl finish continues to shine. That iconic five-dial layout looks fabulous with the red needles offsetting the black instrument faces.
There’s a gentle patina on the controls which looks ace and all the switchgear looks to be intact.
Naturally, the electrical system will likely require some waking up after all these years so all the cabin electrics remain untested.
We note the period Grundig cassette deck still has a tape loaded up and ready to go which contributes to the ‘time-warp’ feel. This car really is a time capsule and it's great to see the interior in its untouched state.

The Exterior

  • Grand Prix White
  • Targa roof and ‘Whale Tail’ spoiler
  • Colour coordinated Fuchs wheels
  • Preserved extraordinarily well
A car doesn’t get much more evocative of the 1980s than a Grand Prix White 911 Targa with a ‘Whale Tail’ spoiler and colour coordinated Fuchs wheels.
Sporting all of the above, this 911 is a great period piece and what’s truly amazing is how well preserved it seems to be. Besides the off mark and a small dent in the offside rear wheel arch, this Porsche does not appear to display any damage or corrosion.
A glance underneath and round the lower bodywork suggests it to be in very good order structurally and there is no obvious indication of rust. The vendor elaborates that the car was always kept under cover, inside a heated garage and so it hasn’t really been exposed to any moisture in 26 years! It's worth noting that the vendor was unable to close the front hatch during the shoot, which isn't surprising since the mechanism has been unused in years.
Having sat for so long, we do advise a comprehensive examination of the vehicle before it is used on the road, but we must say that what we could see looks very promising indeed.

The Mechanics

  • 3.2-litre air-cooled flat-six
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • The engine turns over freely
We’re informed that the vendor kept turning the engine over periodically during its time in storage which was a very prudent thing to do. With a new battery fitted, it turns over easily and apparently displays good oil pressure. At present, there is no spark which the vendor suggests may be an immobiliser issue.
Of course, some work will be needed to recommission this car with it having been sat for so long and its mechanical condition is unknown besides the vendor’s knowledge that it ran well when parked. We’re informed the car can be pushed and naturally all the systems such as the brakes will need to be overhauled.

Summary

It goes without saying that this is an immensely exciting opportunity.
It’s not often such an original and well preserved 911 is offered for sale, so don’t miss the chance to own this awesome Carrera Targa.
