The Appeal
By 1977, the XJ looked rather old-fashioned, so Jaguar did something it had never done before—asked for outside help. Italian Carrozzeria Pininfarina was drafted in to perform the redesign, a decision that proved worth Jaguar’s while, given the increasingly competitive nature of the four-door executive saloon now that the German manufacturers were bringing their A-game.
The Series III XJ was unveiled in April 1979. It introduced thicker and better-integrated bumpers, flush door handles, one-piece front windows (without quarter lights), a redesigned grille, a refined roofline, and a new C-pillar design with a more pronounced ‘Hoffmeister kink’ at its base. A raft of other subtle modifications made the Series III one of the best-regarded of all the classic XJs. Notably, Daimler versions were beloved by the loveable fictional rogue Arthur Dailey in Minder.
This 3.4-litre 1984 example is among the most original examples of the Series III XJ6 you’ll ever find. It’s currently part of a sizeable classic car collection containing numerous Jaguars. We can see why our discerning vendor had to add this to the line-up; cars like this are very hard to find.
Offered in very good overall condition and complete with a wealth of paperwork, this XJ6 is likely to find its way into another collection. Whether you have a garage full of XJs or this is your very first Jag, we can heartily recommend this example.
