The Appeal
Datsun’s Z Car was clever. It mixed the style of two of motoring’s most evocative cars - the Corvette and E-Type - with the sort of build quality and reliability Chevrolet and Jaguar could only dream of. The second generation S130 wisely stuck close to that successful model.
The 280ZX is both sports car and svelte GT, as relaxing as it is stylish. This ‘Series II’ facelift car proves the point, finished in classic red with a sumptuous grey velour interior following a £17,000 restoration. It is pleasingly standard, only a set of smart Konig alloys and a wooden wheel deviating from standard. The originals for both are supplied with the car, together with a raft of high value and rare spares.
The condition reflects that work and the attention of the long term keeper, who has kept it in a de-humidified garage and regularly washed and waxed it. The servicing has been similarly maintained, with servicing up to June this year.
The Irish NCT technical inspection underlines the impression created by the photographs. It runs to February 2025. Good 280ZX make very rewarding classics, with the added advantage that you’ll probably not see another outside of marque shows.
