1983 Morgan 4/4

Highlights

  • Starts, runs, drives and stops
  • We’re informed that it was last serviced about 500 miles ago
  • A great restoration or recommissioning project
  • Powered by a 1.6-litre Ford CVH engine
  • Five-speed manual gearbox

The Appeal

The delightfully anachronistic Morgan’s genius has long been how it amalgamated the simple pleasures of vintage motoring with the reliable powertrains of the modern day. It’s funny to think that this 1983 Morgan 4/4 is now as old as the cars it sought to pay homage to and at forty years old, is now itself a classic car in its own right.
Running, driving and stopping, but in need of some work to bring it back to its former glory, this well-loved Morgan would make a fantastic restoration or recommissioning project.

The History and Paperwork

  • MOT expired on 2nd December 2022
  • The vendor informs us that the last service was carried out a little under 500 miles ago
  • Supplied with a selection of previous MOT certificates
  • Some invoices for parts and servicing are supplied
  • The indicated mileage of 50,121 is supported by the recent MOT history

The Interior

  • The red leather upholstery is in reasonable overall condition
  • The seats have survived very well and exhibit little wear and the same can be said for the door panels
  • The top of the dashboard looks to have suffered from some UV or water damage and is quite washed out
  • All the Smiths instruments appear in fair condition for their age
  • The vendor informs us that the speedometer, temperature gauge and horn function
  • The controls appear in good order with only light wear
  • No carpeting fitted at present
  • Much of this interior would clean up well or else restore

The Exterior

  • The steel bodywork appears very straight and we enjoy that signature Morgan styling that’s remained more or less unchanged to this day
  • Heavily patinated green paintwork adorned with various vinyls including competition numbers
  • There is some corrosion clearly visible in various places
  • The last MOT test (which the car passed), did note that the body was not “fully secure” so we suggest some work to the ash frame will be in order
  • What looks to be the original hood and side screens are in reasonable condition
  • We enjoy the gold coloured wheels and they appear to be in fair shape
  • The brightwork shows its age along with the remainder of the exterior
  • The glass and light lenses look to be intact
  • We could see some deterioration to the wooden floor sections visible on the underside
  • The chassis rails appear quite sound from what we could see
  • The next owner will be able to choose between preserving the patina or restoring the bodywork

The Mechanics

  • 1.6-litre Ford CVH engine
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • The vendor informs us that the car starts, runs, drives and stops
  • The engine would apparently benefit from some tuning
  • We recommend a thorough inspection of the mechanicals before this car hits the road once more

Summary

Here we have an exciting opportunity to put a British icon back on the road.
For those who like to put their own spin on cars, this would make a great blank canvas, or else it would be an excellent candidate for hill climbs or trialling.
