1983 Mazda RX7 (FB Series 2)

Highlights

  • Acquired from Rotary specialist collection
  • Original interior and unmarked bodywork with excellent paint
  • Engine rebuilt with new apex seals 5,000 miles ago

The Appeal

Mazda demonstrated ably with their pretty RX7, that the Rotary-engine concept could be successfully offered as an alternative to the combustion engine.

The combination of agile handling, ease of driving and a reputation for reliability were rewarded with phenomenal sales in the States.

The Rotary 12A engine is incredibly light, tiny, and loves to rev high and Mazda’s technological confidence in the RX7 provided continuous development to establish the car as the original template for a future generation of charismatic sports cars.
This beautifully preserved and very original 1983 Mazda RX7 FB Series 2 has seen a succession of enthusiast owners, with the last owner keeping the car as part of a Rotary collection.

Subject to an engine rebuild with new Apex seals, new tyres and a near-flawless presentation, it comes with a good record of servicing and an MOT to 2023, by which time it will be eligible for historic classification.

Summary

It's a little out of the ordinary, but the unconventional power plant shouldn’t put any prospective owner off.

It has seen regular maintenance and keeping on top of these things is now far easier than you might expect.

There's no doubt about its stylish and practical design with the typical Japanese traits of light controls, which makes it a cinch to drive.

As there are only a handful of UK FB models left in existence, this should be a great investment given the growth in the Japanese collectors market.

Solid and original FB RX7s do not come up often, and with its cherished background and engine rebuild, all that remains is to enjoy that neatly balanced chassis and that sweet tone of the Rotary engine.
