- Just 2 owners from new
- Over $5,000 in restoration work done recently
The Appeal
Large American land yachts such as this 1983 Lincoln Continental are something of a fascination in the UK with their size being so far removed from anything Europe has seen before.
With all the importation paperwork having recently been done, this car is just waiting for an avid collector of motoring americana to pick it up.
History and Paperwork
- Single owner from 1983 until 2022 when it was imported to the UK by second owner
- $5,000 in invoices proving recent restoration work done by second owner
- MoT and tax until 2023
- Eligible to be registered as a Historic Car with the DVLA in 2023
The Interior
- Bright red leather upholstery
- Original working radio
- Functioning air conditioning
There’s no doubt this car was built to satisfy the American market with such a small cabin relative to the shear size of the car. Putting the amusing proportions to the side, this car comes with all the mod-cons expected in a modern vehicle except it was produced in 1983.
Air conditioning, cruise control, power brakes, keyless entry and the same radio that came with the car from factory are all working gadgets in this near-40-year-old car. The list continues with electronically adjustable door mirrors and windows.
Enjoy all these high-tech gizmos from the comfort of the expansive seats coated in the bright red leather that also seemingly decorates the doors and dashboard. Where there’s no leather, it’s dark wood trim that’s used as islands to break up the ocean of hot-red.
Though the seats have the odd crease or two, the rest of the interior presents itself perfectly. You’ll struggle to find a Lincoln Continental interior from the early-1980’s in as good a condition anywhere, let alone the UK.
The Exterior
- Vast, land yacht design
- Pristine black paintwork with red pinstripes
- New wire wheels and whitewall tyres
- Glistening chrome trim
American cars of this category are often dubbed land yachts and when you see the length of this Lincoln Continental on the street, you can understand why. The long body may not have much detail except for the chrome trim and pinstripes that run along the side, but it does have a sense of road presence unavailable with any European-built car.
Towards the front, the large chrome grille sets the perfect centre point for the car while the pop-up headlights are an iconic piece of Lincoln design that is sure to whet any American car enthusiast’s appetite.
From the look of things, the paintwork looks in brilliant condition while the brand-new wire-spoke wheels and whitewall tyres perfectly compliment the excellent condition of the body.
The Mechanics
- Lots of maintenance work gone into the mechanics
- 4.9-litre V8 engine
- Four-speed automatic transmission
Driving a car of this size is all about being as relaxed as possible. The automatic transmission and large, burbling V8 both help make that reality as the car cruises across the country with ease.
This Lincoln Continental should also be able to complete long trips without hesitation thanks to the many hours and dollars that has gone into making it a mechanically sound example. The previous owner took it upon themselves to get the wheels aligned, replace the timing chain, water pump, plugs, fan belts and temperature sensors. The car has had its oil and filters changed while the valve cover gasket has also been replaced.
All the work is clear to see under the bonnet with the engine looking as good as when it left the factory visually.
Summary
Being such a rare car in the UK, this would be an attractive option for any American car collector. But with all the work that’s gone into it and the condition of the car inside and out, this model is sure to attract a lot of attention.
