The Appeal

The leaves are falling from the trees and that means Land Rover season is upon us. It's time to load family, friends, wellington boots and hounds into the back of a Series and trundle off towards your favourite pub, green lane or walking spot.

This ex-Royal Marines Series III Lightweight would be an excellent candidate. Sympathetically upgraded with all-round disc brakes and a later 2.5-litre turbodiesel, it's a supremely usable example, made all the more fun by its canvas tilt.

Affectionately known as "Lucy", this Land Rover has been in current ownership for four years and the vendor has kept it MOT'd and in regular use. Richly patinated and showing some signs of corrosion in places, it would be a great candidate to continue using and improving over time. The MOT runs until February 2025 and the vendor entrusts it to their local LR specialist once a year for a service.

If you're seeking a classic Land Rover experience with a touch of history and improved drivability, Lucy is worthy of your consideration.

History and Paperwork

  • Civilian-registered in November 1999
  • Reportedly ex-Royal Marines
  • In current ownership for four years
  • One former registered keeper according to DVLA data
  • MOT valid until February 2025
  • Annually serviced by a local specialist
  • Diesel engine, DIY roll bar and disc brakes fitted before current ownership

The Condition

  • Canvas tilt fitted and in very good visual order
  • The chassis passes MOT and is reportedly sold overall, exhibiting localised corrosion to the rear crossmember and various other areas
  • The basic alloy bodywork appears in good condition overall and quite straight for a Land Rover of this vintage and nature
  • Richly patinated Sand paintwork; original and unrestored
  • Mud plugger off-road-biased tyres reportedly in good condition
  • Interior features an aftermarket steering wheel and a DIY roll bar added by a previous owner; the vendor is unable to confirm the latter's efficacy
  • The front seats have been upgraded and look more comfortable than the original items
  • Now equipped with a central cubby box which also houses the stereo head unit

The Mechanics

  • 2.5-litre 200 TDi
  • Retains the original Series III transmission: four-speed manual gearbox with selectable low-range and four-wheel-drive
  • Diesel engine upgrade enhances performance over the original 2.25-litre NA engine
  • Disc brakes provide effective stopping power than the original drums
  • Mechanical components show age-commensurate wear but reportedly function well
  • Serviced annually by a LR specialist during current ownership
The vendor comments:

"She drives like a leaf spring Land Rover Lightweight, but that's what makes her so much fun. She rattles like she should, leaks where she's meant to and mostly starts when you want her to. If that's not the classic LR experience, I don't know what is."
