The Appeal
While it may seem unthinkable to us now, the 928 was one of Porsche’s attempts to kill off the 911. with growing fuel crises concerns and slumping sales of the 911, the brand wasn’t always as in love with its engined sports car as it is today. During the 1970s, executives, including owner Ferdinand Porsche, were instead considering a luxury touring car with a conventional engine and layout to bolster the current line-up.
In 1971, Fuhrmann initiated a design study which resulted in the 928, the company’s first clean sheet design for its own model. After much deliberation and totting up of numbers, the engine they chose to use in the first-generation model was a 4.5 litre, carburetted V8, producing around 230 - 240 bhp. This 1982 Series 1 example is something of a survivor, having been lovingly preserved rather than restored. It comes with a substantial history file along with a Porsche Classic Recognition document and is exempt from MOT testing and road tax.
