The Appeal
The 928 was one of Porsche’s attempts to kill off the 911, with growing fuel crises concerns and slumping sales of the 911, the brand wasn’t always as in love with the sports car as it is today. During the 1970’s, executives, including owner Ferdinand Porsche, were considering a fuel-efficient luxury touring car with a conventional engine and layout to bolster the current line-up.
In 1971, Fuhrmann initiated a design study which resulted in the 928, the company’s first clean sheet design for its own model. After much deliberation and totting up of numbers, the engine they chose to use in the first-generation model was a 4.5 litre, carburetted V8, producing around 230 - 240bhp.
The History and Paperwork
- Excellent service history
- £4,000 was spent in 2021
- Excellent provenance with driver’s manual and original service book
- Two sets of keys
- Stacks of paperwork
- MOT exempt, with last test expiring 07.09.2022
- Porsche Classic Recognition document
Note - The current private registration will not be sold with the car, the original registration of OUH 589X will be re-instated.
This example is somewhat of a survivor car, being that it is not a restoration, rather just an extremely loved and well looked after car. After being purchased on the 1st of May 1982, the first owner kept it for 30 odd years where it was looked after by the local Porsche dealership. After passing through a couple of owners it ended up in another enthusiasts collection and then sold on twice through us here at Car&Classic. A previous owner has also had a well-known Porsche specialist (George Morrison - Glasgow) go through all the electronics, as well as having a timing belt change and a full service.
The Interior
- Navy/Silver leather interior is a true time capsule and is in great condition
- All electronics working as they should
- Modern addition of a Pioneer flip screen stereo with phone connectivity, car-play and DAB radio
- New Pioneer speakers fitted too
- Cruise control and A/C working well
- No cracking, warping or damage to the dash can be obviously seen and the rest of the interior is in the same great shape
- Rear boot space is ample and underneath the carpet lives the space-saver spare wheel along with tool kit and a battery cut off switch
The Exterior
- Reportedly rare Zinc/Silver metallic paint is in amazing condition, beautifully showing off the design of the body
- The car has received over £5000 worth of paintwork at a specialist bodyshop in November 2022 to ensure the paintwork is kept in such high quality condition and to sort any imperfections received over the years
- Pop-up headlights work as intended
- Tele-dial wheels are in fantastic condition too and the Dunlop Sport 2000 tyres have good tread left
- All rubbers and seals are reportedly in good condition and there is little to no corrosion around the body – we have tried to show all common areas in the photo gallery for clarity
The Mechanics
- The mechanicals as with all over areas of this car have been well taken care of and looked after by the car’s owners and the car sounds and drives superbly
- Paperwork shows that anything the car has needed has been addressed in a timely manner and a routine service schedule is reported to have been kept to
- During the photoshoot the car started, ran, idled, drove and stopped superbly, really showing just how cared for this car has been.
- Automatic gearbox had no issues changing and was smooth and quiet
Summary
This 928 is a rarity, with it being a series 1 car, pre-facelift in un-restored condition and still being this good, it would certainly be a jewel in anyone’s garage or collection. It’s certainly no retiring type either with the ability to still be an excellent grand tourer.
Add to that this car’s wonderful specification and history and it’s got to be one of the best on sale today.
In short summary, this is a fantastic car in great condition and it is certainly one you don’t want to miss.
