The Appeal
Combining Mercedes Benz quality engineering and the timeless design of the R107 series is a sure recipe for success which has stood the test of time incredibly well. It also explains why the cars hold their value so well and continue to be increasingly collectible.
While many of R107’s were powered by V8’s and some very large engines which can drain the bank rather quickly, the 280SL has significantly wider appeal – allowing the owner to travel in a similar style without the need to stop at the petrol station quite as often.
Here is a wonderful example that has been stored and used sparingly in recent years. With just 45,382 miles on the clock, and being in good, unmolested condition this is an opportunity to own a great example of the very desirable Mercedes SL280.

The Interior
- The hardwearing Blue MB Tex interior is in good shape for its age, with just a few signs of wear in the usual places
- Dashboard all presents well, just a small crack evident in the wooden veneer below gearstick
- Blaupunkt radio/cassette player
- Nice, clean carpets protected with Mercedes overmats
- Fire extinguisher
- Good original condition throughout with a gentle patina of light usage and age
- Hardtop headlining is nice and clean and damage free
- Matching blue door cards are all clean with a few scratches here and there but overall in good condition
- Central locking
- Some of the door rubbers are showing signs of age as illustrated in the photo gallery
- Custom made rear seat padding (easily removed)
- First aid kit
- Clean and dry carpeted boot
The interior presents well with all gauges, dials and switches working as they should.
It all appears to be original with no evidence of any restoration taking place, a testament to the car’s former keepers.
The Exterior
- Mercedes Astral Silver paintwork is in good overall condition with only a small bubbling at the front of the bonnet and a scratch above the boot worthy of noting. The hardtop doesn’t quite match the excellent condition of the rest of the car as there are a few blisters noticeable
- The chrome appears in good order with a nice shine but some areas are beginning to show signs of age, particularly around the boot as shown in the photos
- The rest of car is in remarkably good shape, thanks to it being garaged and well cared for throughout its life
- Soft top in very good condition
- Lights all nice and clear and without damage
- Good overall condition with some cosmetic touching-up needed in places
- Fog lights
The car is a pretty picture wherever it goes and it’s always a joy to see one in such good original condition. On close inspection, it seems the wheel arches are all original with no evidence of filler being used anywhere. It appears an honest car with nothing to hide, and with small amount of work to the areas mentioned above it could look fantastic in no time at all.
The Mechanics
- 2,746cc straight six engine
- 4-speed automatic gearbox
- Last serviced 40 miles ago including oil and filter change, gearbox and fuel filters
- Nice clean engine bay
- Appears solid underneath
The DOHC straight-six is subline engine, producing around 185bhp, which is very respectable given the cars focus is really on luxury rather than high performance. With just 45,000 miles in its lifetime and so few done in recent years the car is probably crying out for good run which will no doubt be top of the winning bidders list. Starting on the button, the car reportedly handles beautifully and there are no issues to report or advise.
The Summary
Most certainly a very desirable and timeless classic, the Mercedes 280SL is an outstanding option for anyone with a sense of style that wants to enjoy the comfort, refinement and handling that Mercedes’ from this era offer. What’s more, it has both roofs for those that enjoy open-top motoring, and with so few miles on the clock, this is bound to attract significant bidding interest.
