THE APPEAL
Inspired by the Japanese twin-cylinder sports bikes that were enjoying great success on the American market, in the 1960s Laverda, renowned for its agile, small-displacement sports motorcycles, decided to build bigger two-cylinders bikes.
After the 1968 650, success came with the 1969 750 S which, combining Japanese-like standards of high construction quality with the performance and sportiness typical of the Breganze company, offered an extraordinary combination of elegance, durability and power.
Production of the twin-cylinder 750 had just begun when Laverda announced its intention to produce a 1.000 cc three-cylinder. The final prototype, presented in Milan in 1971, featured a 3-cylinder in-line engine with chain-driven double overhead cams, a new double-cradle frame and Laverda double-shoe front brakes.
In 1976, fascinated by the sports bikes tuned by the Slater brothers, Laverda importers for Great Britain, Massimo Laverda agreed to create a motorcycle with similar specifications to be sold in the United Kingdom. Thus was born the Jota, with racing pistons and special exhaust and crankshaft, capable of 90 hp and a top speed of 230 km/h, which would win four British production motorcycle championships.
Over the following years, the Jota, now sold all around the world, was perfected with the adoption of double front disc brakes, alloy wheels, a rear disc brake and a new chassis.
To give the engine better balance, in 1982, the 180° crankshaft was replaced with a new 120° one, resulting in the Jota 120, the last Jota based on the original engine and chassis, which would only remain in production for a year and which was replaced in 1983 by the new Laverda RGS.
This rare and fascinating 1982 Jota 120 is one of only around 400 examples of this special model built overall.
Purchased at the factory by its first owner, it remained in his possession for over thirty years, covering just over 25,000 kilometres.
The second and current owner purchased it in 2018 and entrusted it to the care of a well known expert mechanic with long experience of the Laverda brand, who carefully overhauled it, replacing many components including the chain and the clutch and fine-tuning the carburettors.
Since the restoration was completed, this Jota has been driven for no more than 400 km and always maintained with the utmost care.
Equipped with its original license plates and registered with the Italian Motorcycle Federation with Gold Plate, this beautiful Laverda is one of the most interesting and significant models of a great Italian brand that still enjoys great esteem and affection from many enthusiasts all over the world.
