1982 Alfa Romeo Alfasud Sprint Veloce 1.3

Highlights

  • Recently recommissioned by the vendor after a period in dry storage
  • Lesser seen 1.3-litre Veloce with twin Weber carburettors
  • The 26,641 kilometres on the odometer are believed to be correct

The Appeal

There’s something special about Alfa Romeos and the Alfasud Sprint Veloce embodies all the Alfa qualities that make petrolheads go weak at the knees. A soulful twin-carb flat-four up front, a delightful five-speed gearbox at your fingertips and a very light bodyshell make for an exceedingly engaging drive.
Sure its German and French competitors could outcompete it in tests of reliability, build quality and even performance, but nothing quite compares to how an Alfa Romeo makes you feel. This 1.3-litre example was supplied new to Giarre Italy and now resides in Malta. It has covered very few kilometres in its lifetime and has never been restored. With some cosmetic repairs and a few battle scars here and there, this is a very usable example that presents really well overall.
Producing just 85 horsepower, you’re not likely to lose your licence in this Alfasud meaning you can drive it at nine tenths almost all of the time. If you’re looking for a fizzy little sports coupé, this would be a fantastic choice.

The History and Paperwork

  • Supplied new on 4th May 1982 to Catania in Sicily
  • We understand that the first owner drove the car for 19 years before it passed to their son
  • In 2016, it was sold to the mechanic who had always looked after the car
  • Acquired by the vendor in 2016 and imported to Malta
  • Unrestored and very original, with repairs made over time where necessary
  • Recommissioned by the vendor after a period of little use and dry storage
  • The vendor typically used the car about once a month but now has less time with a growing family
  • Email from the Centro Documentazione Alfa Romeo conforming matching numbers and original delivery information
  • Maltese registration paperwork
  • Period service book and brochure
  • Invoices for past servicing and technical inspections

The Interior

  • Largely original and unrestored
  • Velour seats present very well overall
  • A couple of small holes in the driver’s outer seat bolster and to the door seal
  • Little wear anywhere to be seen
  • The notoriously fragile woodgrain-effect gear knob remains in good conditioned
  • The carpeting and headlining present really well
  • The original boot carpet is serviceable although torn in places
  • The vendor reports that everything works as it should
  • No signs of UV damage to the dashboard or other interior plastics
  • Original Alfa Romeo radio blanking plate, although period aftermarket speakers are fitted
  • Spare wheel and original tools are present
  • The vendor replaced the ignition switch with a genuine NOS item

The Exterior

  • Desirable pre-facelift styling
  • Rosso Alfa A.R. 530 paint
  • Smart paintwork overall, with some scratches and orange peel in places
  • Partially resprayed with some slight colour differences across certain panels
  • The paint under the bonnet is believed to be original and presents really well with factory markings on the strut tops and no corrosion to the fixings and fittings
  • Very straight bodywork with good panel fit
  • Given the Alfasud’s infamous propensity to rust, this example is in remarkable shape
  • Some areas of corrosion visible on the boot frame
  • Underneath, all looks to be really smart with no areas of immediate concern
  • All of the brightwork presents really well, although the front badge is cracked
  • The light lenses and glass are all in good shape
  • It sits upon 1979 Ronal A1 14” wheels which have been soda blasted and straightened by an engineering company prior to being repainted in gloss silver
  • We’re informed the Goodyear tyres are new and so in excellent condition
  • The original wheels are included in the sale

The Mechanics

  • 1.3-litre flat-four
  • Five-speed gearbox driving the front wheels
  • Recommissioned by the vendor
  • Fluids and filters replaced every year during current ownership
  • Timing belts and tensioners changed
  • Water pump and coolant flushed
  • New brake booster, braided hoses and fluid
  • New rear brake proportioning valve and pads all round
  • Both Weber carburettors adjusted
  • New windscreen washer pump
  • New OEM rear bushes
  • Fuel pump and fuel sender replaced
  • The fuel tank has been cleaned
  • New ignition coil
  • Reportedly starts, runs and drives without fault

Summary

While the Alfasud proved successful for Alfa Romeo, sadly there are very few good examples remaining today. If you’re looking for a compact sports car with rear seats, this 1982 Sprint Veloce would be a fabulous addition to your garage.
