1981 VW Scirocco Mk1 Storm

Highlights

  • Exceptionally rare edition
  • Bare metal restoration
  • Good paint finish
  • Huge amount of fun to drive

The Appeal

For anyone who has driven Volkswagens of this era, you are well aware of the spritely engines combined with the light and nimble chassis. The Scirocco is well known fro rivalling the GTi in performance all round but is set apart with the Coupe styling and 80’s wedge shape.

This example has in recent times been totally stripped of all components, paint and under seal and has been fully repaired and restored, leaving us today with a useable and tidy example of a fantastically rare little car.

The History and Paperwork

  • Original handbook & booklets
  • Substantial restoration in 2009
  • Collection of old MOT certificates
  • Plethora of paperwork
Having a bear shell restoration in 2009, this car has been clearly loved and enjoyed. The interior for the most part has been left alone, retaining most of it’s original features while the outside and underside have seen the bulk of the work.

Various collections of paperwork show firstly the restoration work summing over £12,000, while others show various upkeep and
preservation through the years.

The original wallet with booklets has been retained along with some older test certificates and the current V5.

The Interior

Sympathetically restored, this Scirocco retains, from what we could tell, all its original interior features of dark blue leather and carpets. The front seats do have substantial wear, the drivers most of all and could use some TLC. That being said, if this were done, the interior would really be quite lovely and ultimately in very good shape with the rear seats in exceptional order along with the door cards and head lining which has been replaced.

The dashboard is in very good order with little damage, the worst being some separation of the leatherette trim on the passenger side which could be easily fixed and a little damage around the drivers air vent. The instrument binnacle is really nice and has an unusual silver coloured surround emphasising the crisp and dark speedometer and tach. Same too for the clock and oil temperature gauge mounted in front of the gear stick being in good condition and clear.
A presumably aftermarket Pioneer stereo has been fitted and this looks fairly period correct and similarly so has the steering wheel, but this defiantly fits the aesthetics of the car and looks sporty.

From what we could see, all the switches and knobs are all in good condition and working, and keeping this interior a really nice time-warp feel.

The Exterior

In 2009 this Scirocco shell was stripped right back, properly welded, repaired and painted to give a very nice, tidy finish today. The restoration was clearly done very well with the paint sill being in good order and no immediate evidence of any corrosion creeping back through, even the front valance is virtually blemish free, a usual culprit for gathering stone chips or other road debris.

The 5.5 inch wide, genuine alloy wheels are in fine fettle too, not perfect of course, with some slight pitting under the newer paint and some small scuffs .
Most of the exterior trims have been retained and kept original, with bumpers, window surrounds and door strips having some light patina but
in keeping with a nice original feel across the whole car.

The Mechanics

  • Good tyres all round
  • Recent boot struts
  • Solid and tidy under bonnet
All round its evident this car is cared for. Under the bonnet is ‘oily rag’ clean with no aftermarket parts ruining the originality of the car. When the car was restored, vital items such as the exhaust, cam belt and alternator, keeping things reliable. All the cables, hoses and wiring are all neatly in their place, something that’s easily overlooked and the under bonnet paintwork is tidy and shiny. The underside of the engine and transmission are nice and dry, a little dampness of oil on the sump, likely just from the filter being changed and the underneath of the car is solid and not heavily sealed, hiding possible repairs.

Summary

Gloriously original looking with just enough work done to give it a massively new lease of life without disturbing much of the originality, this Scirocco storm is a delight and without too much work, would be extremely useable for a car over three decades old. Known for a fine balance of comfort, sportiness and refinement, this is a serious rival to the Mk1 Golf and will equally turn heads.
