1981 Volkswagen Scirocco Mk1 1.6 Storm

Highlights

  • Very rare Storm final edition Mk1
  • Believed one of only 50 remaining in the UK
  • Original and unmodified car retaining its factory features
  • Recent mechanical and bodywork overhaul by specialist
  • Elligible to be registered as a Historic Vehicle
  • Advisory-free MOT to January 2025

The Appeal

Crisp Giugiaro styling and revvy Audi engines gave the Scirocco the edge over its coupe rivals. Although beloved by enthusiasts, in-house competition from the Golf GTI - with which it shared platform and running gear - has always tended to overshadow these superlative cars.
That makes examples like this late model Mk1 Storm exceptionally rare. Only 50 are believed remaining in the UK, out of a production run of just 500 (250 for each of the two special colours). For many this is the ultimate version of the original, equipped as it is with the 1.6litre Audi-developed engine - shared with the Golf GTI - and choice additions like a Zender spoiler, full leather and alloy wheels.
In fact, it was so good that Car journalist LJK Setright - a name that sparks devotion in enthusiasts of a certain age - owned a Mk1 Storm. Praise rarely comes better packaged.
Finished in stylish Bronze Metallic with matching tan leather interior, this highly original Storm retains its factory features and therefore presents very well in the photographs. Refreshed across the bodywork and mechanicals in late 2023 by specialists Fairmont Sports & Classic, it is in good health. It has been enjoyed without any issues by its current keeper and is only for sale due to a loss of storage.
It comes to market with the reassurance of a long, advisory-free MOT, but buyers should note that it is eligible for Historic Vehicle status by age. The Mk1 Scirocco is a design classic and one of the best coupes of its generation. Here is a great example of arguably the best version.

The History and Paperwork

  • UK market car first registered 28th August 1981
  • One of the last Mk1 cars built before the arrival of the revised Mk2
  • Special ‘run out Storm model of which only 500 were built, 250 each of two colours
  • Eligible to be re-registered as a Historic Vehicle under the 40-year rule
  • Current MOT to 23rd January 2025 with no advisories and 116,315 miles showing on test
  • Independent reports suggest only 50 Storms remain in the UK
  • 10 registered keepers
  • Purchased from Fairmont Sports & Classic in late 2023
  • Now only for sale due to a loss of storage space
  • Renovated by Fairmont prior to sale with worksheet shown in photographs
  • Cambelt replaced in July 2018 with water pump and other work to brakes and suspension
  • Some old invoices and MOTs included to enable mileage to be tracked
  • We are told that the odometer was replaced by Fairmont so the displayed mileage may not be correct
  • Buyers can obtain more details on the mileage history through the photographs and MOT records
  • We are told that the car had been unused and dry stored for some years before Fairmont recommissioned it

The Condition

  • Beautifully and seemingly very original Storm in stylish Bronze metallic
  • Retains its Storm features including interior, spoilers and alloys
  • Paintwork condition is very good with recent localised work by Fairmont noted in file
  • Bodywork is very solid with straight panels, no obvious corrosion and good underside
  • Seller notes a small area of touched in damage to edge of driver’s door as shown in photos
  • This car appears not to have been fully restored so some patina should be expected
  • Underside presents well with recent undersealing and no MOT structural advisories
  • 13in factory Storm alloy wheels in very good order with matching spare
  • Fitted with quality Falken tyres which appear to show good condition and plenty of tread
  • Very well kept and original unmodified interior with correct Storm features
  • These include full tan leather seats in great condition with few signs of wear
  • The cabin is original so some patina typical of age and mileage to be expected
  • The Storm brown dashboard is well presented but shows some small cracks
  • These are not immediately visible in photographs but have been advised by seller
  • Some lovely original factory details including three spoke wheel with deep centre boss
  • Also fitted with period correct Blaupunkt Melbourne radio cassette system
  • Dials and switchgear in very good order with no obvious modifications from standard
  • Headlining is well kept with good finish and no notable sagging or tears
  • Brown carpets through cabin and boot areas are original and in good order

The Mechanics

  • Audi-developed 1,588cc fuel injected engine shared with Golf GTI
  • 5spd manual gearbox
  • Mk1 Golf-based platform means excellent handling and performance
  • Recent mechanical recommissioning by Fairmont detailed in photographs
  • Fitted with headlamp relay to improve night vision on dipped beam
  • Reported to drive very well, being responsive and engaging
  • Vendor advises no mechanical issues during ownership
  • Cambelt replaced in 2018 with what appears to be few miles covered since
  • No mechanical or running gear advisories on current MOT
