1981 Toyota Land Cruiser BJ44

Highlights

  • Extremely solid condition from a dry climate
  • Highly original & rare
  • Factory air conditioning
  • Freewheeling front hubs

The Appeal

It’s not very often that these early Land Cruisers come up for sale, especially here in the UK.
This one has recently been imported from Dubai and from what we know, has spent all its life in hot, dry countries and is therefore a very solid example.
3.2L diesel engine, four-wheel drive, 7 seats in this rare medium wheelbase hard topped version which was only available for a few years before being dropped in favour of the longer wheelbase BJ 45 & 46 models.
UK registered and on the road, this is one for the enthusiast to enjoy as it is or painstakingly restore to its former glory.

The History & Paperwork

  • V5c registration document
  • Mot exempt
  • Road Tax exempt from this year
  • Pakistani registration document
This BJ44 was exported from Japan into Pakistan before being exported again for a short time in Dubai before being spotted by the vendor whilst on a business trip.
Subsequently imported into the UK in 2021 and registered for the road in January of 2022.

The Interior

  • Very original throughout
  • Factory air conditioning
  • 7 seats
Basic & workmanlike would be two words that describe a BJ44 Toyota. They were built as a working vehicle and so therefore are plain and simple with cloth seats and vinyl floor coverings.
The dash would appear to be original and is utilitarian being painted steel, but simple to use & functional, with all the switches & knobs within easy reach of the driver.
Seats are comfortable in cloth and may respond well to some gentle cleaning, they appear to be in good condition though with little fraying or major wear signs.
Door cards are good, as too is the roof lining which again, may respond to gently cleaning.
The vendor states that all electrics function as expected.

The Exterior

  • Rare medium 2 door body
  • Body straight & true
  • Chassis very clean
  • Comes from a dry climate
The exterior of this BJ44 is generally straight with only a few small chips & scrapes which would normally be expected to be seen on this type of off-road work horse.

It has had a respray at some time as overspray on most of the door & window runners would indicate, but it still looks good and would look a little better with a little bit of tidying.
Window surrounds have been carefully hand painted in black. The chassis appears to be clean and sound and underneath the whole car looks clean and in good condition.
Wheels are alloy, with the exception of the spare which appears to be steel. Tyres are matching Dunlops.

The Mechanics

  • Solid 3.2L diesel engine
  • Exceptionally clean underneath
  • Said to drive well by the vendor
She certainly started up easily when asked for the photos with no signs of excessive smoke from this large diesel engine.
We’re told by the vendor that the BJ44 drives well, brakes in a straight line and generally works very well as one would expect from this Japanese motor company.
He doesn’t believe anything currently needs attention and that this Land Cruiser is ready to use as is or restore.

Summary

These BJ44 Toyotas are a rare find in this condition. Most have been worked very hard in harsh climates, but this one, would appear to have led a charmed life.
It appears straight, well looked after, yes a little rough around the edges in places as to be expected, but it’s all the more attractive for it and carries its history really well.
Park up and restore or just drive as it is and enjoy, you’ll not find another one easily.
